SALLAH RAGE: Touts Attack Policemen, Shield Robber



Touts at Oko Oba area of Lagos, on Sallah day, beat two policemen, as they chased a suspected robber to their hideout.
Many scampered for safety while others locked their shops and houses for fear. The suspected robber was said to have snatched a motorcycle from a man at about 7.30 am. The crime fighters gave the bandit a hot chase, but the suspect was said to have ran inside the abattoir where he called on his friends to prevent his arrest.
On their bid to shield the suspect, quarrel which later degenerated into a bloody fight broke out between the policemen and the touts at the abattoir.
Although two policemen attached to the Oko Oba Police Station sustained serious injuries, many of the touts who were injured were also rushed to the hospital where the policemen were taken for treatment.
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Deputy Superintendent Ngozi Braide, while confirming the story, said that the policemen on patrol sighted the suspect while he was trying to snatch a motorcycle and gave chase.
Braide said when the police got to the scene, they discovered a man lying faced down and upon making enquiries, were informed what was wrong. He informed them that his motorcycle had been snatched.
The police chased the robber to the abattoir where he was shielded by his friends. They damaged the patrol vehicle and beat up the policemen with all sorts of weapons, but the policemen refused to retaliate. Two policemen were severely injured and were rushed to a hospital. The policemen did not shoot anyone. The policemen remained calm,” Braide pointed out.
