Nine people have been killed after an overloaded passenger boat capsized in Bali Local Government Council of Taraba State.
The dead consists of five children and four women .
Witnesses reported the boat that was crossing between Zude and Mayo-Kam villages.
More than 50 passengers were said to be in the boat, which was also filled with large quantities of goods such as bags of maize, millets and sugar cane as well as domestic animals.
While majority of the male passengers succeeded in escaping females and child passengers struggled and reportedly make the highest number of victims.
When a CAJ News crew visited the scene on Monday evening, search parties were curbing the nooks and crannies of the river in search of missing victims.
According to our eyewitness who gave his name as Alhaji Musa Isa, “One of the victims, a woman had her body almost shattered apart because of the way the boat went and hit one of the bridges when it lost control.”
Eight bodies were said to have been recovered from the river at Mayo-Kam while a body was recovered at Tella in Gassol Local Government Area.
The Councilor representing Kusunbadakoshi Ward in the Area council, Samaila Umaru, confirmed the deaths.
The chairman of the council, Andy Yerima said the incident was “shocking”.
