Paintball centre workers found their
female colleague crushed to death under a stack of wooden barriers she
was unloading from her van.
The 45-year-old woman, who has not yet been named, was found by fellow staff at the Delta Force gaming centre in Plymouth and pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.
She was discovered pinned under the heavy pallets at around 9.30pm on Friday when she failed to answer her phone after taking the delivery and colleagues went to investigate.
The woman is thought to have been a manager at the military-style site, set in woodland off the A38 just outside Plympton.
An ambulance was called but paramedics pronounced the woman, who has not been named, dead at the scene.
Police, who are not treating the incident, which they believe was simply a 'freak accident', as suspicious, were also contacted and an investigation on behalf of the Plymouth coroner was launched.
It is understood that the
Health and Safety Executive (HSE) was contacted, but the investigation
was handed back to police to conclude.
The HSE said it does not investigate deaths at entertainment complexes, although they are understood to be assisting with certain aspects of the police investigation.
Detectives leading the inquiry are also in contact with environmental health officers from South Hams District Council.
No post-mortem examination has
been carried out at this stage although investigators say initial
reports suggest the woman suffered fatal chest injuries.
Delta Force, which describes itself as the world’s number one paintball operator, has 29 centres in the UK and Ireland where they say around 600,000 people took part in 2012.
Its website promises customers 'the very best paintballing experience imaginable - in terms of quality, safety, value and enjoyment.'
At the Plymouth site, known as Pepperwood, combatants take out the enemy using paint guns and grenades, thunderflashes and smoke grenades in game zones named Castle Wolfenstein, Chemical Alley and Viet Cong Village.
Players as young as 10 have the added attraction of earning bonus points for shooting at a 'Terminator' figure that wanders around the battle field.
The centre was closed today but the ticket office was still running as usual. Delta Force bosses did not reply to MailOnline's request for a comment.
Devon and Cornwall Police said the woman’s next of kin has been informed and a file is being prepared for the coroner.
A police spokesman said: 'The woman, who was a member of staff, became trapped while unloading wooden barriers from a transit van. She was pronounced deceased at the scene.
