Driver’s lucky escape after crashing vintage car during race

A DRIVER had a lucky escape after he crashed his vintage car during an attempt to break a race record.

Edmund Burgess was driving a 1924 Bugatti T13 when he lost control of the car and veered towards a low concrete wall.
The driver was taking part in a race at 'La Vie en Bleu' - a two-day pageant celebrating French motoring excellence in Winchcombe, Gloucestershire.

Edmund was driver number 26 in the 'Class 10: Bugatti Car Handicap up to 1500 Class' during the showdown last Sunday.
As Edmund whizzes around the circuit, he attempts to steer round a sharp bend.
But the right-hand wheels start to skid and the car veers towards the edge of the track.

Stones and flecks of mud fly in the driver's face as the car starts to flip over.
Edmund battles to regain control of the car but he is thrown sideways when the car hits a bollard.
Pictures show how the car continues to flip and hits the concrete barrier as Edmund disappears from view.
In later shots, a trio of men are seen rushing over to the driver’s aid as the wrecked car lies upturned on the side of the track.

An ambulance is seen in the foreground of one photo and Edmund is seen sitting upright and is surrounded by safety crews and race officials.
Other photos show the damage to the steering wheel and the exterior of the battered Bugatti.
It's thought Edmund escaped the crash without sustaining serious injuries.
He was hoping to break the record set by Kraig Mycock, who completed the circuit in 59.21 seconds in his T13 Brescia in September 2009.
