PHOTO: 4 Injured in Multiple Auto Crash in Abuja
Four persons were injured in a multiple auto crash involving four vehicles, along Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Way, Abuja.
Collision
happened on October 30, 2013, Wednesday, at about 3 p.m., when the
driver of a green Honda Accord with registration number BWR 291 AG,
coming from the Kado axis, lost control and veered off its lane and had a
head-on collision with a Toyota Corolla with registration number FD 973
LND.
A
grey Toyota Corolla with registration number BQ 660 KWL and a Kia with
registration number AKD 406 AS, with the inscription, Bam MFB, also
rammed into the other vehicles.
The
driver of the Honda Accord car and two occupants of the Toyota Corolla
and one other person were seriously injured, while the vehicles were
also badly damaged.
It
was also learnt that one of the female passengers, who wasn’t strapped
with the seat belt was flung out of the vehicle, and one of the vehicles
rammed into her.
Team
leader of the Vehicle Inspection Office, Life Camp unit, Mr. Felix
Okonkwo, who was at the scene, said the Honda Accord was driven by a
learner.
“The
driver of the Honda seemed to be a learner because we saw a learner’s
permit/signal on the car. He veered from his lane to another lane, thus
causing multiple collisions. The driver broke his legs and hands”.
“In fact, the vehicle went off the ground so, the impact must have been very high,” he added.

Ogun Okada Riders Go Violent in Court, 25 Arrested
Members of rival factions of the Amalgamated Commercial Motorcycle Owners and Riders Association (ACOMORAN) engaged in a violent clash that left several persons injured in Abeokuta on October 30, 2013, Wednesday.
Two
factions of the commercial motorcyclists, a.k.a. Okada riders, clashed
at the premises of the Federal High Court, Abeokuta, where they were
engaged in a legal battle this day.
Scores
of civil servants and innocent bystanders in the area fled in different
directions to escape the violence as the feuding ACOMORAN members
freely used dangerous weapons, including guns, machetes and other
missiles against one another.
Sporadic
gunshots allegedly fired by the rival ACOMORAN members were said to
have attracted the attention of the state military anti-crime outfit,
Operation MESA, the police, operatives of the State Security Service and
the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.
According
to the Punch, the crux of the matter was a suit filed by the former
Secretary of the association, Lateef Yekini, challenging his alleged
detention sometime ago by the ACOMORAN Chairman, Alhaji Shamsudeen
Apelogun.
The
Apelogun group had accused the former secretary of embezzling the
association’s funds totaling about N1m and subsequently invited the
police to investigate the matter.
A
free-for-all, however, ensued among the members of the two factions in
the court premises shortly after the case was adjourned till December 3.

ASUU Strike: Police Use Tear Gas Against Protesting UniAbuja Lecturers
The
Nigerian Police Force used tear gas against the members of the Academic
Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Abuja branch, as they
mobilise for their protest into the streets of the Federal Capital
City, Abuja.
Eyewitnesses
said that the lecturers had gathered at the mini-campus of the
university at Gwagwalada for the protest when suddenly policemen and
plain clothes security personnel took over the entire arena and
prevented them from the embarking on the protest.
Dr.
Clement Chup, zonal Chairman of ASUU, told the journalists that ASUU
forwarded a written request to the Commissioner of Police at Gwagwalada
to notify him of their intentions, but all the protesters were shocked
when the policemen showed up and prevented them from entering the
campus.
Read the press statement of ASUU rep below:
“We, members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU of University of Abuja had actually planned to carry out a peaceful demonstration today (October 30, 2013, Wednesday). What we planned was to have a community marching just to march through some major streets in Abuja, to sensitize the public on the essence of our strike. You will agree with me that the strike that has been on for the past four months now is a cause for worry for everybody. We wanted to tell members of the public we are on strike because the Federal Government have refused to implement the agreement they had with our members since 2009.“But unfortunately when we got to the campus this morning, we were prevented from entering the campus by policemen. When they prevented us from entering the campus we sat down helplessly outside the gate, just chatting and trying to put heads together, the policemen came around and tear gassed us several times to disperse us.“We were wondering why security agents who supposed to provide security for law abiding citizens would turn around and begin to oppress the same people they are supposed to provide security for. It was really a cause for worry, even as they threw over 13 canisters of tear gas at us. Some of us were soaked in the tear gas and one of us who has asthma condition was rushed to the hospital.“We insisted that it is our right, so at the end of the day, we were able to carry out our protest at a point in front of the university gate. When they tried to stop us and they didn’t succeed, they now allowed us to carry out our protest at the gate where we displayed our banners, sang our solidarity song and left”.

Captain Kirk to command new Navy destroyer
The commander of the U.S. Navy's sleek new guided-missile destroyer, which launched late last week in Maine, has a name to match its space-age look: Captain Kirk.
Captain James Kirk, the prospective commanding officer of USS Zumwalt, will lead the 610-foot vessel, the Navy's largest destroyer and first of three new Zumwalt-class ships "designed for littoral operations and land attack," the Navy said.
Kirk, a native of Bethesda, Md., was commissioned at the U.S. Naval Academy in 1990 and has served in a variety posts as a "surface warfare officer," according to his online bio. "Ashore, Captain Kirk has served as Executive Assistant to the Navy’s Chief of Legislative Affairs and as an Action Officer on the Joint Staff."
Kirk obtained a master's degrees in national security studies at the U.S. Naval War College and U.S. Army War College, where he undoubtedly heard more than his share of "Star Trek" jokes.
The ship, which was moved from dry dock in Bath, Maine, to a pier on the Kennebec River on Friday, is loaded with new technologies, including "radar reflecting angles, a striking inward-sloping tumblehome hull" and advanced gun system.
The lead ship and class are named in honor of former Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Elmo R. "Bud" Zumwalt Jr., who served as chief of naval operations from 1970 to 1974.
According to the Navy, construction on the first Zumwalt is "more than 87 percent complete," with remaining work on the hull scheduled to be completed before delivery in late 2014.
So who will serve as Capt. Kirk's "Spock" on the Zumwalt? According to the Navy, it's Cmdr. Jeffrey W. Hickox, who was named prospective executive officer of the ship.

All this bodywork is dragon me down: Gaudy gold BMW complete with wings, tail and feet made from yak bones
Many BMW fans will likely be horrified by the customised 'paint job' that this Z4 has endured.
But a rare few may actually love it.
At the very least it's difficult not to appreciate the amount of work that has gone into this dragon auto-job.
A matter of taste: To some this might be their dream BMW 'paint-job' but it's unlikely to appeal to the masses
The scaly vehicle is made from yak bone, each scale decorated or painted gold
But effort is no guarantee of achievement, and its questionable whether anyone would genuinely be seen in this vehicle.
Or whether it could still get anywhere near the Z4's usual top speed of 156mph.
Each and every scale is made from the bone of China's indigenous mountain yak, and is designed with a dragon-inspired pattern.
The dragon's claws clasp around the car's wheels
A fiery tail sashays from the Z4's boot
It might be eye-catching, but whether or not the vehicle performs well is another question, given the excess weight from the bone, and resistance from the design.
The unique design was on display last week at the China Import and Export Fair, in the southern Guangdong province.
It's not known if this model was for sale - and if so, if it sold - but it certainly stood out from the crowd.
The vehicle's bonnet is entirely covered in the boney scales, forming the dragon's giant nose
Baffled: The unusual design got some bizarre looks from spectators attending the trade fair in the southern Guangdong province
It is not known if the unique model was for sale at the import/export trade fair
Difficult to miss: The BMW Z4 has then painstakingly been adorned with the limbs of a dragon

Jihadis To Syrian Christians: ''Convert To Islam Or You Will Be Crucified Like Jesus''
“You don’t know when and you don’t know where they hit,” says
Amir, a 55-year-old Christian merchant. “Life here is often too
difficult.”
The mortars have repeatedly hit in his mainly Christian district of Damascus, al-Qassaa, reportedly killing at least 32 people and injuring dozens of others the past two weeks.
Rebel shelling into the capital has increasingly hit several majority-Christian districts, particularly al-Qassaa.
The shelling and recent rebel assaults on predominantly Christian towns have fueled fears among Syria’s religious minorities about the growing role of Islamic extremists and foreign fighters among the rebels fighting against President Bashar Assad’s rule.
Christians believe they are being targeted — in part because of the anti-Christian sentiment among extremists and in part as punishment for what is seen as their support for Assad.
Youssef Naame and his wife Norma, an elderly Christian couple from Maaloula, described how bearded extremist Islamists stormed the northeastern village early last month chanting “God is Great!”
“The jihadis shouted: Convert to Islam, or you will be crucified like Jesus,” Youssef said with a shaky voice in his daughter’s al-Qassaa apartment.
He said they were trapped with other Christians for three days in a small house next to the town church, without food or electricity.
“There were snipers shooting everywhere, we were not able to move,” he recalled. “We were so scared. I lost my speech.”
Though some Christians oppose Assad’s brutal crackdown on the opposition and the community has tried to stay on the sidelines in the civil war, the rebellion’s increasingly outspoken Islamist rhetoric and the prominent role of Islamic extremist fighters have pushed them toward support of the government. Christians make up about 10 percent of Syria’s 23 million people.
“When you bring a Christian and make him choose between Assad and the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant, the answer is clear,” said Hilal Khashan, a political scientist professor at the American University of Beirut, referring to the al-Qaida branch fighting alongside the rebels. “It doesn’t need much thinking.”
The rebels have targeted other Syrian minorities, particularly Alawites, the Shiite offshoot sect to which Assad belongs and which is his main support base. Altogether, ethnic and religious minorities — also including Kurds and Druze — make up a quarter of Syria’s population. The majority, and most rebels, are Sunni Muslim.
But Christian areas have recently been the focus of fighting. A week ago, rebels from the al-Qaida-linked group Jabhat al-Nusra attacked the Christian town of Sadad, north of Damascus, seizing control until they were driven out Monday after fierce fighting with government forces.
Similarly, thousands fled the ancient Christian-majority town of Maaloula when rebels took control of it last month, holding it for several days until government forces retook it. With rebels in the hills around the town, those who fled are still too afraid to return.
Two bishops were abducted in rebel-held areas in April, and an Italian Jesuit priest, Father Paolo Dall’Oglio, went missing in July after traveling to meet al-Qaida militants in the rebel-held northeastern city of Raqqa. None has been heard from since.
In August, rebel gunmen killed 11 people in a drive-by shooting in central Syria as Christians celebrated a feast day. Activists said at the time that many of those killed were pro-government militiamen manning checkpoints. Al-Qaida-linked fighters have damaged and desecrated churches in areas they have seized.
Christians in Damascus are convinced that extremists are deliberately targeting their neighborhoods as rebels battle government forces trying to uproot them from the towns they control outside the capital. Al-Qassaa is close to besieged rebel-held suburbs where Muslim residents have pleaded for international help to save them from starvation and constant government bombardment.
“Recently I noticed that every Sunday, they launch more than 15 mortars a day,” Amir said. “They are targeting specifically Christian areas.”
Hundreds of Christians have fled al-Qassaa to other areas of the capital or into neighboring Lebanon. Nationwide, some 450,000 Christians have fled their homes, part of an exodus of some 7 million during the 2 ½-year civil war, according to Church officials.
Almost all the 50,000 Christians in the mixed city of Homs have fled, and another 200,000 have fled the northern city of Aleppo, both battleground cities. When insurgents occupied the strategic central town of Qusair in 2012, about 7,000 Catholics were forced out and their homes were looted.
Syrian Church leaders fear that Assad’s fall would lead to an Islamist state that would spell the end to the centuries-old existence of Christians on Syrian soil.
“We are not taking any sides in the conflict,” Bishop Luka, deputy leader of the Syriac Orthodox Church, said at his headquarters in the historic Damascus Old Town.
“We are standing alongside the country, because this country is ours,” he said. “If the country is gone, we have nothing left. Nothing will remain of us. “

National Conference: Nyiam Resigns After Shouting Match With Oshiomhole (PHOTO)
Following his outburst against Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State a member of the the Presidential Advisory Committee on National Conference/Dialogue, Col Tony Nyiam (rtd), was yesterday forced to resign by the Senator Femi-Okurounmu-led committee.
It was gathered that members of the panel were embarrassed by Nyiam’s perceived partisanship and had to apologise to Oshiomhole.
However, in a telephone chat with Vanguard last night, Nyiam refused to confirm whether or not he had quit the job. Asked if he had resigned, Col Nyiam, in a combatant tone asked Vanguard to question the source of the report that he had resigned.
“Who told you that I have resigned? Ask the person who told you to tell you his authority or how he learnt that I have resigned. Thank you!” he said and hung up.
Another member of the committee firther clarified that the committee had to force him to step down in order to redeem the panel’s image.
“ The governor, Oshiomhole was our host. It was unbecoming of a member of a commiitee that was set up to listen to Nigerians to now want to stop Nigerians from talking, no matter what they had to say. We faulted him, he didn’t like it; we told him he embarrassed the committee; he admitted his outburst was wrong and we demanded his resignation.
Authoritative sources told Vanguard that Okurounmu led other members of the panel to apologise to the governor and showed him a copy of Nyiam’s alleged resignation letter.
Oshiomhole reportedly accepted the apology.
This came as suspected thugs disrupted the proceedings of the Committee on national conference in Benin City, when they stopped Governor Oshiomhole and others from making contributions to the ongoing talks.
The disruption came after a member of PAC, Col. Tony Nyiam (rtd) had shouted down the Governor while making his contribution.
The thugs believed to have been imported from neighbouring states heckled the Governor as soon as they realised that his contributions would be different from the expected opinions.
The governor who took the stage to make his contribution after the Isoko Ethnic group had made its contribution said he objected to spending huge public funds on a wasteful venture, saying, during the tenure of President Olusegun Obasanjo, money was spent on a similar conference and at the end, nothing came out of that conference.
While the governor was still making his speech, Col Nyiam stood up to challenge the governor and shouted him down.
But Oshiomhole who had earlier told the crowd that his views about the conference may not be the views of the people of the state but “my personal views” insisted that he must be allowed to air his views publicly and he continued despite comments from Ijaw groups at the conference.
“I will be surprised if anything changes. Sincerely, I have no business to deceive or mislead anyone. I believe that the outcome of this conference will not be different from that of other conferences we have had in the past.”
But as soon as Governor Oshiomhole made this statement, committee member, Col Nyiam jumped up and shouted at the Governor.
He was restrained by other members who were taken aback by his action. Even while the Governor was still making his contribution, Nyiam started screaming at the Governor to shut up and sit down.
Thereafter by the PDP thugs who disrupted the whole proceedings and many scampered for safety as a result of the unruliness of the committee member and thugs.
The governor who insisted on concluding his remarks however left the floor when the thugs were getting violent.
However, the Governor had, at a courtesy visit to him in his office by members of the Committee led by Senator Femi Okurounmu, said he had no faith in the whole process.
Oshiomhole said: “All I owe Nigeria now is to speak my mind. It could be error of my head but certainly not of my heart. As much as I wish you well, I just want to say that I have no faith in this process and I do not think it was necessary at all. I am unable to find any basis to give me some illusion that this exercise will not be different from the others. And I honestly think that in terms of the private sector, when a country keeps debating how we can live together that cannot be one of the basis on which the outside community will invest in Nigeria. They may well wait until we know how we want to live in Nigeria.”
He lamented that fifty-three years after independence, Nigerians still preferred to look at themselves from their ethnic origin rather than being Nigerians, saying, “for me, I am just a Nigerian. I do not think that more than one hundred years when we have set aside billions of naira to celebrate centenary celebrating the fact of amalgamation of Northern and Southern Nigeria, and we have lived together as one country for over a hundred years, and we have gone through independence, we have been free for fifty three years and we are coming back to ask the question, how could we be there.
“I think Nigeria needs to address very serious issues. When I see eminent Nigerians discussing this issue, I am sure they know that Nigeria’s problem is not this politics of sharing which the national dialogue is all about, who is getting what, who has this natural endowment, who should do this or not do this. For me this is the act of perfecting poverty. The real challenge is getting Nigeria back to production. The real challenge is creating industrial base and this cannot be resolved through conferences. We have moved from parliamentary system in our own wisdom to the presidential system. We have test-run it and it was aborted by the military and it has re-incarnated in the present form.”
“Nigeria does need a serious reflection about how to return to those core values that made Nigeria work before. Those healthy competition between the governments, visit the whole question of attitude and unless that changes, I do not see how any dialogue can work. I was discussing with somebody last week and he noted that this is the eleventh conference and I ask what ten conferences could not do, how would the eleventh one do it? Why do we think we can continue doing the same thing the same old way and think that this time the outcome would be different?
The Governor said nobody convened a meeting without stating an agenda and asking others to draw up an agenda for the meeting, saying “one would have expected the Federal Government to make an outline and allow Nigerians make additional input, instead of saying there are no no-go areas and giving the impression the exercise will end nowhere, at which point the governor’s security aides formed a ring around him, just as the arena was getting very rowdy, with shouts of no, yes, the only words that could be discerned. ’Then the issue of fashioning a new political system came up in the past, a lot of money was spent, transporting people all over the whole country and expanding more on related issues but at end, what did we get. To me, this is not meant to work and it will not work. Fconception we know we want to talk but we do not know what we want to talk about.”
Earlier, chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee on National Dialogue/Conference, Senator Femi Okurounmu said they were in Benin as part of their tour of the six geo political zones to get their input as regards the content of the agenda, the duration, choice of delegation and legal framework. States of the South-South zone and different ethnic nationalities, including the Ijaw National Council, Urhobo Progress Union, Benin Forum, Ijaws of Gbaramatu, Itsekiri Leaders of Thought, Isoko Development Union, Midwest Consultative Forum and many other groups made presentations.

74 Confirmed Dead In Cholera Outbreak
The death toll from the current cholera outbreak in some parts of the country has been put at 74.
According to the Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, about 373 Nigerians have been affected.
Plateau, Sokoto, Zamfara and Lagos States had recorded cases of cholera outbreak in the last one week.
Zamfara State has recorded 1,117 cases with official confirmation of deaths in two weeks.
The minister, who was disturbed by the outbreak urged Nigerians to take the issue of sanitation very seriously.
Chukwu spoke on Monday during the “2013 Physicians Week” with the theme: “Federalism and Nigeria’s Healthcare system-An appraisal of the Primary and Secondary healthcare systems.”
The programme was organized by the Nigerian Medical Association.
He said, “As at yesterday (Sunday), 373 Nigerians have been recorded having suffered cholera in this current outbreak out of which we have lost 74. We still got a report just yesterday (Sunday) that few of the cases can do with antibiotic.
“Each Nigerian must commit to certain things; can we stop going into the bush to defecate? Open defecation is not neglected but every Nigerian must know that it is unhealthy. Even market people are paying N5:00 to use toilets in the market place and that is what they do outside this country.
“My role as the Minister of Health is limited; as a minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, I will continue to advocate that every sector keys into what each sector should do and individuals should preach to every Nigerian to do proper things in terms of sanitation.”
He pointed that, what was important is that Nigerians must do everything to stop open defecation and have access to clean water.

VIDEO: Gov. Oshiomhole Escapes Being Lynched at National Dialogue Committee Meeting in Benin City
The meeting of the Presidential Advisory Committee on National Dialogue (PACND) with the stakeholders in the South-South ended in confusion, following an outburst from participants against a remark made by Governor Adams Oshiomhole.
Pius Nsogho reported that Governor Oshiomhole was whisked away from the venue of PACND by his security when the situation became tense.
Later Edo State Government has released the official press statement. It blamed alleged PDP ‘thugs’ for disrupting the proceedings of the PACND in Benin City, when they stopped Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State and others from making contributions to the ongoing talks.
Col Tony Nyiam (rtd), a member of the Presidential Advisory Committee, is believed to be the arrowhead of the disruption as he shouted down the Governor while making his contribution.
The Governor who took the stage to make his contribution shortly after the Isoko Ethnic group had made their contribution said he objected to spending huge public funds on a wasteful venture saying, during the tenure of President Olusegun Obasanjo, money was spent on similar conference and at the end, nothing came out of that conference.
But as soon as Governor Oshiomhole made this statement, committee member, Col Nyiam jumped on his feet and would perhaps have lunged at the Governor were he close to him. He was restrained by other members who were taken aback by his action.
Even while the Governor was still making his contribution, Nyiam started screaming at the top of his voice for the Governor to shut up and sit down. He was then joined in by the PDP ‘thugs’ who disrupted the whole proceedings and many scampered for safety as a result of the unruliness of the committee member and thugs.
The Governor who insisted on concluding his remarks however yielded the floor when the thugs were getting violent.
After leaving the PACND meeting Gov. Oshiomhole lamented that fifty-three years after independence, "Nigerians still prefer to look at themselves from their ethnic origin rather than being Nigerians, saying, “for me, I am just a Nigerian".
“Nigeria does need a serious reflection about how to return to those core values that made Nigeria work before. Those healthy competition between the governments, visit the whole question of attitude and unless that changes, I do not see how any dialogue can work”, he said.
Earlier the Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee on National Dialogue/Conference, Senator Femi Okurounmu said they were in Benin as part of their to the six geo political zones to get their input as regards the content of the agenda, the duration, choice of delegation and legal framework.
