Former Nasarawa police, SSS chiefs to face Ombatse panel

Former Nasarawa state police boss and his counterpart at the State Security Service, are to appear before the Nasarawa state judicial commission of inquiry into the killing of more than 60 security operatives in Alakyo area of Lafia by militia belonging to the Ombatse sect.

Ex-commissioner of police, Abayomi Akeremale, and former director of SSS, Mohammed Halilu, are to appear before the panel on Monday. The two officers were in charge in their respective agencies in the state during the crisis.
The security operatives, comprising dozens of police and SSS operatives, were ambushed and attacked by well-armed men said to be members of sect.
Chairman of the judicial commission, Justice Joseph Fola-Gbadeyan (rtd), said the commission has completed hearing on the 36 memos it received and will commence hearing on those mentioned in some of the memoranda.
Mr. Fola-Gbadeyan advised all those mentioned in any of the memorandum during presentation to appear before the commission and make their submissions.
The commission had earlier received the submission of the state attorney general and commissioner for Justice, Innocent Lagi, on behalf of the state government. Mr. Lagi said the state government was committed to ensuring that those found to be behind the killings were brought to justice.
“We vow to ensure that justice is done to the slain officers and anybody arrested in connection with the incident, government will ensure that he is brought to justice,” he said. He said that the state government has made a lot of effort in supporting security situations in the state by acting positively on every security advice.
Femi Falana, who led the attorney general in presentation through cross examination, also argued before the commission that legal notice number 4 that banned and proscribed both the activities of Ombatse and the association just like an executive order, has the force of the law.
