The Catholic priest who had been presented at a Lodwar court yesterday over the allegations of sodómising a form three student committed suicide yesterday night.
The body of Fr. John Manzi was found hours later on Tuesday night hanging from the roof top of his house at the Catholic Diocese of Lodwar in Turkana Central district.
The priest had appeared at a Lodwar court charged with sodómising school children the latest being a form three student, but was released on a bond of Sh 100,000 by the magistrate after he pleaded not guilty.
According to one of his workers who sought anonymity, the priest had sent them to buy foodstuffs at the nearest market. It is said the priest used to have workers to do his errands and on that day he unusually ordered them to go out, most likely not to prevent him from taking his life.
It is while they were away that the priest put on his priesthood attire before he used an electric cord to end his life.
The workers returned home later only to find the door locked from inside. After having no responses they broke into and found his body dangling.
The incident attracted Catholic priests and faithful in the neighbourhood who were left in shock as to why the man of God committed the crime.
Turkana Central deputy OCPD, Mr. John Onditi confirmed the priest s death saying that diocese workers discovered his lifeless body on Tuesday night.
Onditi said circumstances that led to the death were still unclear but police suspect he might have been stressed following the pending case that he was faced with.
