Drivers fall into icy river after bridge collapses in America

DRIVERS dropped into a cold river when a busy commuter bridge collapsed in America.

It's thought that a truck crash on a four-lane freeway may have led to the destruction of the bridge over the Skagit River, Washington State.
Three people were pulled from the icy water after the dramatic crash but all were rescued alive.

Two were treated for hypothermia and investigators are working to piece together the cause of yesterday's accident. Survivor Dan Sligh was driving along the bridge when his car tumbled into the water and said it was a "miracle" he was alive.
He said: "I saw just a white flash and cold water.
"You talk miracles. I don't know what you want to call it. When you're sitting down in the water and there's all that mangled metal and bridge, and you're looking around kind of pinching yourself and realising you're lucky to be alive.

Carnage ... wrecked bridge
"It's a pretty amazing day to tell you the truth." Helicopters, ambulances and boats all took part in the rescue effort and floodlights were brought in to make sure no-one was left in the water.
The bridge was built in 1955 and is near Mount Vernon, roughly halfway between Seattle, Washington and Vancouver, Canada.
