Again, bomb blasts rock Maiduguri

No fewer than five persons suspected to be informants of the Joint Task Force (JTF) were shot dead by members of the Boko Haram sect yesterday in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.
They were killed for allegedly exposing the Boko Haram’s modus operandi.
This is even as twin explosions yesterday evening rocked Bulabulin and Ali Kotoko areas of Maiduguri.
It will be recalled that suspected terrorists in Bulabulin/ Ali Kotoko had on Saturday evening ambushed a man and attempted to snatch his car for a suicide mission.
The attempt was, however, resisted by some residents, who alerted the JTF. Many of the terrorists were subsequently arrested.
It was learnt that the arrest did not go down well other sect members, who killed the five people on the suspicion that they were informants.
The JTF, on hearing the report of the killing, cordoned off the area, a situation which led to the exchange of gunfire with the sect.
A reliable source said that during the exchange of fire, some of the terrorists detonated the two explosives.
It was not clear as at press time if the blasts resulted in casualties.
The JTF spokesman, Lt- Col. Sagir Musa, could not be reached for confirmation as his phone number was not going.
Meanwhile, another police barracks in the outskirts of Bama was in the early hours of yesterday attacked by terrorists with Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs).
The attack came barely a week after military, police formations and prisons in the town were attacked by some members of the dreaded Boko Haram sect.
A resident of the barracks, who did not want her name mentioned, confirmed the attack in a telephone chat with National Mirror yesterday.
She said: “The gunmen came on motorcycles and tricycles at about 3am and started chanting Allahu Akbar (God is great) before detonating bombs that set some houses on fire. Through the window of the other house, one of the gunmen shouted that policemen, their wives and children should leave the town immediately.
“Five minutes later, I heard three blasts behind the barracks before soldiers mobilised to the scene to repel the gunmen. The terrorists, however, fled towards Mubi Road and College of Education, Bama.”
She said that none of the residents was killed or injured; adding that shortly after the gunmen stormed the barracks, women and their children fled before armed military personnel mobilized to repel the attackers.
It was also learnt that motorists and commuters travelling to Gwoza, Michika, Mubi and Maiduguri were asked by soldiers to return to their respective point of departure.
The Borno State Police Public Relations Officer, Gideon Jibrin, confirmed the incident, adding that none of the gunmen was arrested.
