Spineless GEJ Learned Nothing from Brutish OBJ: What a Shame!

It has been sad to watch the past few months as the PDP disintegrated month-by-month under the leadership (or lack thereof) of Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.

Square, Abuja, for a mini-convention of the party which was aimed at reconciling warring factions. While he was still seated, adorned with all the paraphernalia and appurtenances of President and Commander-in-Chief, Federal Republic of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, the celebrated fugitive from American judicial system, led a group of “dissident” governors on a walk-out. The most that GEJ could do, reportedly, was to wear a morose look and shake his bowed head like a defeated man.
The level of disrespect of this man was so palpable that many who did not care about his political fortunes or misfortunes had to, at least, rise in defense of the exalted Office of the President.
No matter what you thought of Olusegun Obasanjo’s leadership of the country and the PDP, you almost wished that OBJ was back in charge; for he had a strong spine. I cannot imagine ANY governor walking out on OBJ. That governor was not yet born when OBJ ruled. That governor would have eaten his pounded yam as ordinary yams.
That governor, for good or ill, would have found himself in so much trouble he would curse the day he was elected. And this was the case largely because OBJ knew his onions. He paid attention to the minutiae of government; not just at the Federal level, but to some degree, even at the State level. So, when OBJ barked, governors and ministers trembled because they knew he could also bite hard. Those with skeletons in their cupboards accused him of being too dictatorial, and that he forgot he was no longer in the military.
It was cheap blackmail and OBJ saw it as such. He was not having any of that nonsense. He believed that Nigeria, at the time, needed a leader who was “feared rather than loved”; for Nigerians only loved if they had something to gain personally. Those who doubted the potency of OBJ’s teeth did not live (politically) to tell the story. Those who underrated his political acumen did so at their own peril. Ask Tafa Balogun, Abubakar Atiku et al.
Almost as broke as a church rat in 1999, OBJ broke out of jail and rode on the backs of the naïve PDP founders straight into Aso Rock. All the bigwigs who founded the party thought OBJ would show his gratitude by laying low and accepting the presidency as Yoruba’s (June 12 mandate) placation gift. But no sooner had he settled in office than he rolled up IGP Tafa Balogun and carted him off to jail, making him regurgitate most of his loot on the way out.
When Balogun did not move fast enough on his way out of the courtroom on one occasion, his police escorts beat him to near-pulpiness. Remember, it was the same Balogun’s police force that oversaw the massive election rigging that brought OBJ to power. But OBJ was smart enough to keep his hands clean during the exercise, letting the so-called PDP founders do the dirty work. OBJ then set up the ICPC and EFCC. For most of his first term, OBJ hardly employed either of the two organizations. He allowed them as free a reign as possible until the start of his second term. And by then, many of the would-be thorns in OBJ’s flesh had so soiled their hands with corruption that none could withstand his withering assaults when they came.
If the senators planned to curb OBJ by impeaching him, the man was several steps ahead of them. He started by making an example of their leader, Adulphus Wabara. Nuhu Ribadu’s EFCC accused then Senate Leader Wabara (and four others) of demanding and receiving N55 million bribe from Fabian Osuji, then Minister of Education. Wabara ostensibly shared (or planned to share) the money with other senators as condition for passing the 2005 education ministry’s budget. After Wabara got his hands full of EFCC arrests and invitations and eventually lost his job in the Senate, all of the remaining senators became born-again, and all accepted OBJ as their Jesus.
To the best of my knowledge, GEJ has not gotten (and cannot get) nasty with any of the politicians questioning his authority. Even with governor Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers), GEJ had to hire surrogates (including his wife) to fight his proxy battle. He has forgotten that if he wins the proxy battle, he would be unable to claim the victory directly. And, therefore, he would still be viewed as a weakling. GEJ operates as if he is forever unable to assert his legitimacy because of his indebtedness to all those PDP governors that helped him overcome Turai Yar’Adua’s cabal. That cabal almost successfully denied him the presidency when President Yar’Adua died. That cabal is well and alive. And because of GEJ’s lack of confidence, the cabal has grown exponentially with the infusion of the Atiku machine.
OBJ was different. OBJ embarked on the systematic annihilation of his enemies so that he could govern in peace. When former Plateau State governor, Joshua Chibi Dariye, who worked assiduously for OBJ’s election in 1999 and his re-election in 2007, started to flex his muscles, he did not know what hit him when OBJ’s train came through. Dariye had helped himself to, at least, $9 million of his State’s money. For that, OBJ set the London Metropolitan Police after Dariye.
They arrested him in London in 2004. The former governor jumped bail and escaped to Nigeria where, as a serving governor, he had immunity from prosecution. OBJ did not relent though. He knew that Dariye did not steal all that money by himself. He had to have had some members of his state’s Legislature in cahoots with him. OBJ then applied the “Alamieyeseigha’s Tactic”: blackmail the corrupt state legislators with the threat of prosecution for corruption and promise them leniency if they would impeach the governor.
Of course, by November 2006, Dariye was impeached and the odious stench oozing out of Plateau State was cleaned out. In the same State, former Second Republic NPP governor, Solomon Daushep Lar, who was also Chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees (BoT) when OBJ was president, found himself on the receiving end of OBJ’s koboko (or bulala, if you are Hausa). Lar supported then Vice-President Atiku’s quest for the Presidency, and that was reason enough for OBJ to get him removed as Chaiman of BoT.
Lar has since gone into political oblivion. Even his Vice-President, because he was so steeped in many vices, was unable to extricate himself from OBJ’s trap. Atiku spent most of his second term under OBJ fighting off the EFCC, the Interpol, the FBI, or the Washington DC, Virginia and Maryland police departments. Atiku had led an insurrection (much as he is doing right now) to deny OBJ a second term, therefore, OBJ set out to teach him a lesson about insubordination and disloyalty. That Atiku is not currently languishing in jail is a testament to his supreme survival skills.
For much of OBJ’s second term, he kept the proverbial Sword of Damocles hanging on the heads of governors Bola Tinubu (Lagos), Diepreye Alamieyeseigha (Bayelsa), Ayodele Fayose (Ekiti), Orji Kalu (Abia), Chimaraoke Nnamani (Enugu), Peter Odili (Rivers), Lucky Igbinedion (Edo), Ahmed Sanni Yerima (Zamfara), Jolly Nyame (Taraba), Boni Haruna (Adamawa), George Akume (Benue), Attahiru Bafarawa (Sokoto), Adamu Muazu (Bauchi), Victor Attah (Akwa Ibom), Bukola Saraki (Kwara), and Rasidi Ladoja (Oyo). They all had to switch their bedding spots every night and slept with one eye open in case OBJ’s EFCC showed up. Only Donald Duke (Cross River) was openly absolved by the EFCC at that time.
Also, at some point, IBB’s supporters egged him on to challenge OBJ’s stranglehold on the party. And for a while, it appeared IBB was going to bite. But once the EFCC arrested his son, Muhammed, and asked him to explain how he came about the multi-billion naira shares he held in Globacom when he never worked a day in his life, IBB simmered and became an apostle of OBJ’s political catechism.
OBJ had one thing or the other on most of the governors. They dared not look him cross-eyed or challenge his authority in any way, let alone walk out on him. That respect…that gravitas that the office of president carries (whether you are president of the Republic of Sao Tome and Principe, or you are the president of the United States of America), is what GEJ lacks.
It does not require clairvoyance to know that GEJ, in spite of his adroitness as a politician (he did not become deputy-governor, governor, vice-president, and president in succession all on sheer luck) is a much maligned and compromised character. You can tell that most of the governors know GEJ lacks any moral authority to threaten them with the EFCC, or even an ordinary definitive suspension/expulsion from the party. Only under GEJ could a person like Atiku retain the right to call a press conference in broad daylight, at a public arena, and make demands.
Under OBJ, Atiku was humiliated and so marginalized to the point that OBJ withdrew his official aides! Atiku had to hire media aides from his personal purse!! Now this same man has grown a pair of cajones (testicles) big enough to challenge GEJ so brazenly. Only under such an enfeebled and cowered ruler could the Atikus of PDP still thrive.
It was even reported that the so-called G-7 governors who staged the walk-out and later formed their own “New PDP” had the temerity to demand, as one of their conditions for making peace with GEJ, that he orders the EFCC to desist from probing them! What!! I will not be surprised if the G-7 announces tomorrow the expulsion of GEJ himself from PDP!!!
After begging OBJ to intercede in the PDP internecine squabbles, GEJ, out of frustration (and again through surrogates), now reportedly blames OBJ for being the fomenter of the many fratricidal feuds in the party. Who is to blame if, as the de facto leader of the nation and the ruling party, GEJ had to rely on OBJ to periodically help mediate his many fights? A couple of Yoruba proverbs here: “I’d rather not be king if I wield no authority over the people”; “If you are a hawk and you can’t scoop up a chick, you are worthless”. Next time we have a president, he better be somebody imbued with limitless courage, boundless wisdom and a spotless character so that no one is able to take him hostage.

Don’t Attend Oyinlola’s Meeting, Osun PDP Tells Members

The Osun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party on Thursday warned its members against attending any meeting called by the former National Secretary of the party, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, or any member of the New PDP led by Abubakar Baraje.
READ MORE:  http://news.naij.com/46454.html

The party said this after a meeting of the PDP Elders’ Committee in the state.
The leaders of the party in a communique read after the meeting by the Secretary of the PDP Elders Committee, Mr. Dosu Oladipo, threatened that any PDP member who flouted the directive would be sanctioned.
Some of the leaders of the party who attended the meeting held at the PDP state secretariat in Osogbo included, the Chairman of the Elders Committee, Alhaji Shuaibu Oyedokun, PDP Chairman in the state and Alhaji Gani Olaoluwa.
Oyedokun said the Minister of State for Defence, Erelu Olusola Obada, Chief Ebenezer Babatope, Olasunkanmi Akinlabi, Wole Oke, Tajudeen Oladipo, Fatai Akinbade, Senator Iyiola Omisore and some other leaders of the party were not present at the meeting but were in support of the party’s decision.
Asked if the party was planning to sanction Oyinlola, Oyedokun said he believed that the crisis would be resolved and the former would come back.
The communique read in part, “It was unanimously agreed that no member of the PDP in Osun State should attend any meeting called by the so-called New PDP or Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola. Disobedience to this will attract sanctions.
“Pending the resolution of the case filed in court by Oyinlola’s group, we demand that the office of the secretary of the party should be given to the PDP in Osun State.
“The PDP in Osun State is resolved to recapture power from the ruling APC in the 2014 governorship election and the party will also deliver the state in the 2015 presidential election.”
But it appears that some of the party leaders in the state are not satisfied with the decision of the PDP in Osun State to dump Oyinlola. At the same time, some of them still pledged loyalty to the PDP faction led by Alhaji Bamangar Tukur and to President Goodluck Jonathan.
However, some of those who are supposed to attend the meeting including two governorship aspirants, who Oyedokun said were in support of the decision, Akinbade and Oke, denied the claim. They spoke separately with our corespondent on the telephone saying they were not part of the meeting and could not have been part of the decision taken.
Akinbade said, “It is a big fraud, I was not part of the meeting where the decision was taken.”

Oke also said, “ I wasn’t at the meeting and I was not part of the decision but I am loyal to my president, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan. We should await the result of the consultation panel on the crisis. I believe the crisis will soon be resolved.”

Two of our members are abroad and could not join us today.
“They are Solomon Lar and Alex Ekwueme and we are carrying them along.

Rivers Crisis: IG Ordered The Redeployment Of Amaechi Security - Police

The Rivers State Police Command on Friday defended its role in the ongoing Rives crisis, saying it was the Inspector General of Police, IG, Mohammed Abubakar, that ordered the redeployment of the security details of Governor Rotimi Amaechi.
READ MORE:  http://news.naij.com/46449.html

The Rivers State Government on Thursday night through a statement signed by the Commissioner of Information and Technology, Ibim Semenitari, raised an alarm that the Commissioner of Police in the state, Joseph Mbu was taking measures it believed were endangering the life of Mr. Amaechi.
The state accused Mr. Mbu of making curious, discreet inquiries about the governor’s movements; and redeploying the police officer in charge of Mr. Amaechi’s convoy for failing to furnish Mr. Mbu with details about the governor’s movement.
While responding to the claims by the Rivers government, the spokesperson for the Rivers Police, Angela Agabe, told PREMIUM TIMES that Mr. Abubakar ordered that all escort commanders, camp commandant and all other details attached to every state government house across the nation cease to bear such titles and thus be redeployed and replaced.
“A signal from the Force Headquarters said that all officers occupying such posts should, with immediate effect, be redeployed and replaced and it is not only in Rivers state, its applicable to the 36 states in the country,” Ms. Agabe said The state government also accused Mr. Mbu of compromising the governor’s security and safety on various occasions, saying that the police boss in May allowed ex-militants to barricade the gate into the Government House after parading major streets of Port Harcourt; thus proving that Mr. Mbu held the governor in disdain.
Ms. Agabe denied the accusation and insisted that the police commissioner could not have allowed militants to attack the governor and would not do anything to jeopardise the governor’s security. However, the Rivers Information Commissioner, Ibim Semenitari, on Friday, countered Ms. Agabe’s “excuses”; saying they were hard to believe.
She said they were not the same reasons given when the governor’s Escort Commander and the Camp Commandant were summoned to the police headquarters; and when the governor personally called Mr. Mbu to complain about the removal of his escort commander.
“Even if, for the purposes of argument, it were indeed factual that the Inspector General of police ordered the redeployment of Governor Amaechi’s Escort Commander, wouldn’t the courteous thing be for the Commissioner of Police and the police high command to inform and explain this to Governor Amaechi?” she asked. She then insisted, “On matters of his personal security, a governor reserves the right to reject or accept security details as he may be comfortable with.”
She stated that the Rivers government was reluctant to accept what it considers a lame and unsatisfactory argument by the Rivers State Police Command. Meanwhile, the Force Public Relations Officer, Frank Mba, who speaks for the Nigerian Police and Mr. Abubakar, is yet to confirm the reasons offered by Ms. Agabe.
Phone calls and text messages to his phone were not answered. Mr. Amaechi, had, at the onset of the Rivers crisis, called for the redeployment of Mr. Mbu from Rivers accusing the police chief of bias in the political crisis in the state and of relative incompetence in the discharge of his duties.

The Spain international's future at Stamford Bridge had been uncertain during the summer transfer window but the player himself insists he never considered leaving
The 25-year-old was linked with the likes of Tottenham, Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain during the transfer window but remained with the Blues despite the interest.

Mata claims he never considered leaving Chelsea throughout the summer and is looking forward to winning more trophies with the Blues now the window is closed.

"I think it's normal in every transfer window that there are lots of rumours but I'm happy here," he told Chelsea TV.

"It's been a very, very good two seasons for me here, maybe the best of my career, and what I want this season is the same.

"I'm looking forward to achieving as many trophies as we did the last two seasons and hopefully this is going to be a good season for us again.

"Has it been hard for me to focus on my football with all the speculation? For me it's not, if you have things clear in your mind and have belief in yourself. My only aim is to play here, grow as a player and do as good a season as the last two which were amazing for me.

"These two seasons have flown by, but to me this is good because when you are enjoying things and you are happy, time goes quicker."

Mata has made just one start this season under Jose Mourinho but after recovering from a thigh problem the midfielder feels he is back to full fitness and ready to reclaim his starting berth.

"We are doing a very good week of training and I feel really good. I'm looking forward to playing. Yes I am back to 100 per cent," added Mata.

"It was a difficult pre-season for me because I had an injury, I never had this before. It took me a little bit more time to get fit but now I'm feeling really good.

"I had four weeks off [ahead of pre-season training] and to be honest that's too much time for me because in the last five or six years I didn't have this amount of rest.

"For me the best thing is to play as much as I can because I love to play, I love playing at the weekend and in the middle of the week. If you are having a lot of games during the season, maybe the training is the games."

Say What? China Says 400 million Can't Speak National Language

More than 400 million Chinese are unable to speak the national language Mandarin, and large numbers in the rest of the country speak it badly, state media said on Thursday as the government launched another push for linguistic unity.
READ MORE:  http://news.naij.com/46431.html

China's ruling Communist Party has promoted Mandarin for decades to unite a nation with thousands of often mutually unintelligible dialects and numerous minority languages, but has been hampered by the country's size and lack of investment in education, especially in poor rural areas.
Officials have admitted they will probably never get the whole country to be able to speak Mandarin, formally called Putonghua in China, meaning "common tongue", suggesting everyone should be able to speak it.Ministry of Education spokeswoman Xu Mei said that only 70 percent of the country could speak Mandarin,
many of them poorly, and the remaining 30 percent or 400 million people could not speak it at all, Xinhua news agency reported."The country still needs to invest in promoting Mandarin," it quoted her as saying, ahead of an annual campaign to promote Mandarin held every year since 1998."This year the ministry will focus on the remote countryside and areas inhabited by ethnic minorities," Xu said.

UPDATED: Images Of Dead Imams Attract Crowds From Aсross the Country

A mosque, popularly called Alfa Shehu Mosque, at Owode-Onirin along Ikorodu road, Lagos State, Southwest Nigeria, is surrounded by Muslim faithful where according to some sources, the images of Sheik Ibrahim Niyyas, Sheik Hamad Tijhani and Shehu Bulala, appeared on the walls of the mosque and neighbouring houses.
READ MORE:  http://news.naij.com/46423.html

Today is the 4th day when people are trooping to the mosque from the very morning, after the apparitions purportedly appeared on the walls of the mosque.
The images had appeared a few days before the Ramadan fasting period ended but the Imam of the Mosque, Alhaji Shehu Nurudeen.
Alhaji Shehu Nurudeen had advised his children not to make the discovery public because people may find it difficult to believe, until a man (name withheld), went there from Apapa area of Lagos State on Tuesday morning to confirm that he had a revelation about the incident.
The Imam’s son, Ibrahim Nurudeen said that after the stranger’s visit people started besieging the mosque to see the "wonders of God" on the walls of the mosque.
He said: "When we were about rounding off the fast, my dad saw the image on the wall inside the mosque but he warned us against publicising it because people may not believe.
We were however surprised on Tuesday morning when a man whom we had not seen before, came around to say that he got a revelation about Sheik Niyyas, Tijhani and Bulala, appearing on the wall.
Before we could address the issue, people had started trooping in from various parts of the country to see what was happening here. My dad had to leave the house since people started coming to confirm for themselves.
I’m not surprised at the way people have been coming because those people who appeared on the walls are our legends in Islam."
"The images were looking so real at the initial stage of appearance but people trying to touch the walls made them to disappear," claimed another Islamic cleric, Jamiu Afeez.

He also said that they had a tough time controlling the crowd at the mosque who came to catch a glimpse of the images.
The young cleric further stated that people had been there from Offa, Ilorin and some parts of the country to confirm the incident.
"We had to call mobile policemen and soldiers to help us control the crowd here yesterday because people have not stopped coming.
We have been praying here since that Tuesday morning, day and night because it is a revelation from God and a clear indication that our prayers have been answered.
The more we prayed, the more the Sheiks appeared. People have come in from Ilorin, Offa and other parts of the country to see for themselves," he explained.

One of the Muslims said that a Christian neighbour also saw it on the wall and called the Imam’s attention to it, a scenario she believed is a clear indication that God is one.
The woman clad in a hijab, also said that it portrayed the height of God’s presence in their midst and to further prove to the world that Islam is a religion of Light and Peace.
"This is the work of God and nobody can fault it. Their neighbour who also saw it is a Christian and this clearly shows that our God is one.
It is also a clear indication that God is in our midst and that he has answered our prayers. Islam is a religion of Light and Peace, this incident has proven that again," the eyewitness said, pleading anonymity.
At the mosque people were still praying fervently while others bought bottled water and rubbed their bottles against the wall on which the apparition appeared, while making requests from the perceived images.
Worshippers inside the mosque continued shouting "Allahu", more and more Muslim faithful keep trooping to the mosque.
Sheik Niyyas, whose appartion is causing the huge stir, was a popular Islamic cleric who was born in 1900 and died in 1975.
He was born in Senegal where he is still being revered and whorshipped by some Islamic adherents in the West African country.

Pope Francis Phones Gay Catholic: "Your Homosexuality Doesn't Matter"

Pope Francis has reportedly called a young gay Catholic man in France to reassure him about his sexuality.
READ MORE:  http://news.naij.com/46412.html

The Pope is said to have called the man to reassure him about his sexuality
Christophe Trutino had written to the Pope to emotionally explain his inner turmoil in reconciling his sexuality with his faith, explaining how he was terrified he was going to hell for being gay.
The 25-year-old sales assistant from Toulouse said that due to the ongoing row over France’s battle over same-sex marriage, he was struggling to stay a believer in the Catholic faith.
Trutino said he was left stunned when he then received a phone call from the head of the Catholic Church himself. “Your homosexuality. It doesn't matter”, the Pope reportedly told him, according to the local newspaper La Dépêche du Midi.
"It was he who started the conversation," Trutino said. He said 'Christopher? It's Pope Francis'. I was unsettled, of course. I asked, " Really? " He replied: "Yes."
“I received the letter that you sent me. You need to remain courageous and continue to believe and pray and stay good,” the Pope told him during the nine-minute conversation in Spanish.
“Your homosexuality. It doesn’t matter. One way or another, we are all children of God. This is why we must continue to be good," the Pope told him.
There has been a rise in French homophobia following a spike in anti-gay marriage protestors. Trutino said the phone call ended with the Pope asking him to pray for him and that he would do the same in return.
“When I hung up the phone, I was completely filled with emotion," the man said. I was shaking. At the same time, the conversation was very relaxed. It was like a call from a friend, nice, very human.”
The Vatican has not confirmed yet whether the phone call took place.
While Francis' predecessor Benedict XVI was an extreme opponent of gay rights – once describing homosexuality as a "defection of human nature" – the most recent Pope has expressed his tolerance towards homosexuality.
During his recent visit to Brazil he said: "If a person is gay and seeks God and has good will, who am I to judge?"

Imo Police Arrest Illegal University Operator

The Police Command of Imo state has announced the arrest of 53-year-old man, Mr. Fidelis Chukwujindu for allegedly defrauding over 500 young boys and girls seeking admission tertiary institution.

The suspect has reportedly floated an illegal and non-existing university college hospital in Ogboko, which he claimed was an affiliation of a university in the United Kingdom.
Mr. Mohammed Katsina, the Police Commissioner of Imo state, met the journalists at the premises of the non-existing university college hospital
Mr. Mohammed Katsina told the newsmen the suspect was arrested by the intelligence unit of the command at the school premises when he was conducting fake entrance examination for over 100 students who purchased the admission forms at the sum of N8,000 each.
The suspect pretended to be both founder and vice chancellor of the non-existing institution.
Mr. Chukwujindu defrauded young secondary school leavers, who really needed to get admission into tertiary institution for continuation of their education and study the course of their choice.
Mr. Chukwujindu’s cover was blown, when the Imo state police command got wind of the information and stormed the premises while conducting fake entrance examination for the first batch of students who already paid the sum of N8,000 each for the admission forms and examination fees.
The Police Commissioner of Imo state expressed disappointment over the incident, stating that the future of young people who are desperately in pursuit of their educational career is being toiled with.
He also promised that Mr. Chukwujindu will be charged to court for further prosecution, after further investigations.
However, the suspect, Mr. Chukwujindu, denied the accusations, said he is a trained medical practitioner and that the institution he heads has been registered with the Federal Ministry of Education in Abuja. He added that academic operations have not commenced due to setbacks.

In a statement, the state Commissioner of Information, Ibim Semenitari, accused  Mr. Mbu of making curious, discreet enquiries about the governor’s movements.
Mrs Semenitari also accused the police commissioner of redeploying the police officer in charge of Mr. Amaechi’s convoy for failing to furnish him with details about the governor’s movement.
“After redeploying the Escort Commander, CP Mbu also requested the Camp Commandant of Government House, Port Harcourt, to give him prior briefing of the Governor’s daily movement. A request which in practice would be difficult to comply with unless the Camp Commandant gets prior knowledge of the Governor’s movement,” the statement said.
The commissioner added, “We suspect that the request for daily prior briefing on the Governor’s movement may be to furnish strange persons with necessary details of his movement and, thereby placing him in harms’ way.
“At different times, CP Mbu has compromised Governor Amaechi’s security and safety, and even personally led an attack on Government House, Port Harcourt on July 10, 2013. As Commissioner of Police, CP Mbu, refuses to brief the Governor, who is the Chief Security Officer of the state on the state of security in Rivers State.”

More
Today, Thursday September 5, 2013, the Commissioner of Police in Rivers State, Mr. Mbu Joseph Mbu redeployed the Escort Commander, in charge of the Convoy of the Governor of Rivers State, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi. The redeployment according to CP Mbu was because the Escort Commander had refused his directive to “furnish (the CP) with prior information of the movement of the Governor.” The Escort Commander is not in charge of the Governor’s Protocol and cannot have prior knowledge of the Governor’s movement, especially in the prevailing circumstances regarding security in the State.
After redeploying the Escort Commander, CP Mbu also requested the Camp Commandant of Government House, Port Harcourt, to give him prior briefing of the Governor’s daily movement. A request which in practice would be difficult to comply with unless the Camp Commandant gets prior knowledge of the Governor’s movement.
The Government of Rivers State is most uncomfortable with these developments and their implications for the security of Governor Amaechi. This is more so, as the developments are coming on the heels of the Rivers State Police Command’s declaration of Governor Amaechi’s ADC (which is receiving medical attention) as a deserter.
This sudden interest of CP Mbu regarding the daily movement of Governor Amaechi cannot be borne out of love. If his intentions were noble and above board, CP Mbu has Governor Amaechi’s telephone number and could have reached him directly to make the request of prior briefing of his movements. Alternatively, he could have written officially to the Secretary to State Government to make the same request.
This would be the first time, since Governor Amaechi assumed office in 2007, that a Police Commissioner would be requesting prior information of his movement. This was not the case even in the hey days of militancy in Rivers State. As far as we know this is an exception rather than the rule.
The fact that CP Mbu waited for the Governor to travel out of Port Harcourt to issue the invitation to policemen attached to Government House is curious and indicative of ulterior motives. His sudden interest in the Governor’s movement is suggestive of a more sinister motive.
CP Mbu has not hidden the fact that he holds Governor Amaechi in disdain and would stop at nothing to either harm him or aid those planning to harm him. After all in May 2013, he allowed ex-Militants to barricade the gate into the Government House after parading major streets of Port Harcourt. He has even acknowledged before the media that he found nothing wrong in fraternizing with militants.
We suspect that the request for daily prior briefing on the Governor’s movement may be to furnish strange persons with necessary details of his movement and, thereby placing him in harms’ way.
At different times, CP Mbu has compromised Governor Amaechi’s security and safety, and even personally led an attack on Government House, Port Harcourt on July 10, 2013. As Commissioner of Police, CP Mbu, refuses to brief the Governor, who is the Chief Security Officer of the state on the state of security in Rivers State.
The Governor had made formal report to the Police High Command concerning his worries about the CP and nothing has come out of the complaint. We have chosen to cry out to Nigerians and the rest of the world about this threat to Governor Amaechi’s life as a last resort. We therefore wish to alert Nigerians and the rest of the world that CP Mbu should be held responsible should anything evil happen to the Governor of Rivers State Rt. Hon. Chibuike Amaechi, any principal officer or top government functionary in Rivers State. We believe that his current actions are sufficient warning to us “as a tree that cries out cannot kill anyone on its path.”
Signed
Ibim Semenitari

PDP CRISIS: Jonathan Storms Out Of Reconciliation Meeting, Attacks Obasanjo

President Goodluck Jonathan lashed out at former President Olusegun Obasanjo, accusing him of being the mastermind of the intractable crisis in the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, reliable presidency sources have said.
READ MORE:  http://news.naij.com/46366.html

“Obasanjo created the problem, he should go and solve it,” Mr. Jonathan was quoted as saying at a meeting he held with leading members of the Abubakar Baraje’s faction of the party on Sunday night.
The reconciliation meeting was called a day after former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, seven state governors, and some other party top guns walked out of the party’s national convention in Abuja and then announced the formation of a parallel faction.
Mr. Obasanjo was not at the meeting but both men had worshipped together at the Aso Rock chapel earlier that day.
Sources at the meeting said after the “dissident” governors, led by Kano State Governor, Musa Kwankwaso, tabled their grievances; a livid President Jonathan fumed about how opposition elements within his party were trying to blackmail him to submission.
He then suddenly rose from his seat and stormed out of the meeting saying, while going away, that he was no longer in the mood for any reconciliation talk and that Mr. Obasanjo, who created the mess in the party in the first place, should be allowed to clear it.
“We were shocked when the president walked out of the meeting in anger saying he had grown increasingly frustrated by Mr. Obasanjo’s destabilizing antics,” one of our sources said. “He pointedly accused the former president of being behind the crisis.”
Another source said as the president hurried away, the chairman of the party’s Board of Trustees, Tony Anenih, ran after him pleading with him to return.
He eventually returned.

Oluwaseun, 34, a nurse, appeared in court with husband on Thursday.
The incident was said to have occurred at the Palmgroove area of Lagos.
Olumide, 34, who was the assistant manager of De-Daltex Nigeria Enterprises Ltd, was said to have used his position to access vital company documents.
He was said to be in charge of collection of cheques from customers.
According to the police, between June and September 2012, Olumide, Oluwaseun and the third defendant, Adenuga Olumuyiwa, 45, forged the certificate of incorporation of De-Daltex Nigeria Enterprises Ltd and opened two bank accounts with it.
The forged document was said to have been signed by Oluwaseun, as being a co-owner.
The three suspects allegedly executed business deals with the document and signed a “Board Resolution” purporting same to emanate from De-Daltex.
The police told the court that within four months, N796,863 was stolen from the company.
Later, the fraud allegedly festered and an additional N13, 272, 063 was withdrawn from the First City Monument Bank.
The company was said to have detected the crime and alerted the police who arrested the three suspects.
They were arraigned on six counts of stealing, forgery, altering and making documents without authority.
The charges read in part, “That you, Ogunsanya Olumide, m, Ogunsanya Oluwaseun, f, Adenuga Olumuyiwa, m, and others at large sometime in June 2012, at Palmgroove, Lagos, in the Lagos Magisterial District did conspire among yourselves to commit felony to wit: stealing, forgery, altering and making documents without authority.
“That you, Ogunsanya Olumide, m, Ogunsanya Oluwaseun, f, Adenuga Olumuyiwa, m, and others at large between June 2009 and April 2012 at FCMB Plc in the aforesaid Magisterial District did dishonestly steal the sum of N13, 272, 063 (Thirteen Million, Two Hundred and Seventy Two Thousand, and Sixty- Three Naira) property of De-Daltex Nigeria Enterprises Limited represented by Dayo Solarin.”
The prosecutor,  Emmanuel Eze, from the legal department of the State Criminal Investigation Department, Yaba, said the offences were contrary to and punishable under Sections 409, 285(7), 368 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2011.
The defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges and elected summary trial.
The defence counsel, Ola Ogunbiyi, applied for the bail of the defendants in liberal terms.
He added, “I will also like the court to take into cognisance the fact that the second defendant is pregnant and weak.”
The magistrate, Mr. F.J Adefioye, admitted the defendants to bail in the sum of N2m each with two sureties in like sum.
He added that the sureties should provide affidavit of means, be resident in Lagos and tender six months statements of their accounts.
The matter was adjourned till November 20.

Miss Nigeria Pageant Organisers And Miss Nigeria 2011 Battle Over Car

Miss Nigeria 2011, Feyi Sodipo and the Miss Nigeria pageant organisers, Daily Times are at loggerheads.

READ MORE:  http://news.naij.com/46372.html

According to reports, their issue stems from the fact that Daily Times have been attempting to take back the Hyundai Accent Sodipo was given when she was crowned Miss Nigeria Winner in 2011. Although the pageant organisers are not revealing their reasons for wanting the car back, the crowned queen believes it's because she got another car from the Ogun state government for being an ambassador for the state.
It has been previously reported that three people were arrested after they tried to forcefully retrieve the car from Feyi and even kidnap her.
When Feyi was asked about the incident, she says:

Feyi spoke with Encomium mag about the incident and other troubles with Daily Times. She said:
"They have been trying to take my car for months now. They have been harassing me all around to surrender the car. The first time they tried it, they tried to for my car open. The second time I had to drive into a police station where the car was impounded and later released to me. Later, the Lagos Police Command invited me for a meeting. They spoke to me and Mr Anosike (Daily Times MD) and they requested I provided the car.
I told them it was in Ogun state and they gave me three policemen to follow me to Ogun state to retrieve the car, that's where the kidnap story came from. I don't understand why they keep requesting for a car I won alongside the crown at the pageant. Maybe because I was given another car by Ogun state governor for being an ambassador, but even at that it's still my car. There was never an agreement that I should return the car after my reign. The car is presently with the police. I feel so harassed and humiliated. I didn't enjoy my reign. Even when I wanted to go abroad for my scholarship, I couldn't do that because when I asked for my scholarship which was part of what I won at the pageant, they told me it had expired. They didn't do anything for me as a beauty queen. I was not even invited to this year's pageant. I was the last queen and I should have crowned the next one, but they didn't even invite me."
A rep of the Miss Nigeria pageant, managing editor of Daily Times, Mrs Isabella Osamor had this to say on the issue:
"I really don't know the genesis of the whole thing. All I know is that Feyi has two cars and we wanted to recover one and we have asked the police to do that, so the matter is now between her and the police not us.

Victor Moses Makes Liverpool Squad

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has included Victor Moses and Mamadou Sakho in his 25-man squad for the new season.

Moses signed to liverpool from Chelsea on Monday, which is the last day of the summer transfers.
Liverpool's Luis Suarez also features after being linked away from the club over the last few months.
All Barclays Premier League managers had to submit names to the authorities on Wednesday following the closure of the summer transfer window.
Rules state that clubs can have no more than 17 players who are not deemed to be ‘home grown’, but may have as many U-21 stars as they like.
The Premier League says, “A Home Grown player will be defined as one who, irrespective of his nationality or age, has been registered with any club affiliated to the Football Association or the Football Association of Wales for a period, continuous or not, of three entire seasons or 36 months prior to his 21st birthday (or the end of the season during which he turns 21).”
Changes can be made, however, when the window reopens again on January 1 2014.
Moses arrived in Nigeria on Tuesday to play for the Super Eagles against the Flames of Malawi in a Brazil 2014 World Cup qualifier. The match will be played in the city of Calabar on Saturday.

'We Expect Battle From Malawi' – Keshi

Super Eagles coach, Stephen Keshi, expects the Flames of Malawi to display their best when they play against Nigeria in the Word Cup qualifier in Calabar on Saturday.

Keshi led the team in another training session in the rain on Thursday, making it twice they would defy nature to prepare for the crucial game.
“I’m expecting them (Malawi) to fight like they never did before. They need to win, while we’re okay with a draw,” Keshi said after the training session.
“I’m happy my players are eager to get the job done. This is the first time I’m having a full house and it has presented me several options on the tactics to adopt.”
Keshi said he was satisfied with what he saw in the training but insisted no player would be guaranteed a starting role on the match day.
“It is wrong for a player to think all he needs to do to get a role in the Super Eagles is to show up for matches,” he said.
“When I was still young at the age of 18 or 19, coming into the national team to play with Sylvanus Okpala, Segun Odegbami, Mudashiru Lawal, Franklin Howard and Aloysius Atuegbu, I could see how these players fought for roles in the team during training sessions. I recall how Kadiri Ikhana would train very hard just to retain his position in the team; that was how we had a very good team.
“That practice continued through the (Clemens) Westerhof period, when there was no assurance of any player getting an automatic role.
“I was playing in Europe then, but Westerhof would tell me, ‘Hey, if you don’t play good, you won’t make the team. You’re my captain but no good play, no shirt.’ He was right, so I had to give everything I had in training to keep my position. That attitude helped us during our era. And that’s how it is everywhere in the world.”
The former Togo coach said building the team with players from the Nigerian league had helped in strengthening the squad and given it stability.
“It’s a shame that the players in the domestic league were not given more time in the national team to prove themselves. I had to go back and look into that because I believe that 99.99 per cent of the players that had played for Nigeria were from the domestic league. So how can anyone tell me that with our 140 million people we can’t have good home-based players playing in the national team. We might as well cancel the league.
“I don’t know if they (former Super Eagles coaches) were scared or not, but in every other country I had worked, I had to start building the national teams from the domestic leagues. The more you give opportunities to the domestic league players, the better the national team would be. It was like that in Mali and Togo so I had to do the same thing in Nigeria.
“I can understand some of the coaches for snubbing the players because it is not an easy thing to do. The players are very raw and need to be refined. They need to be instilled with confidence and taught new things. All these things take time, and most of our coaches probably didn’t have time for that so they relied on foreign-based players. I also rely on foreign-based players but they must start from home.”

We Will Explore Nigeria’s Weaknesses - Malawi Trainer Saintfiet

Malawi's technical adviser Tom Saintfiet has said his team will act as underdogs in Saturday's 2014 World Cup qualifier against Nigeria.
READ MORE:  http://news.naij.com/46381.html

Saintfiet has stated that it will take a miracle for the Flames to defeat the Super Eagles in Calabar, but they are willing to take their chances
The Belgian also declared that his team will expect a miracle to happen in order to beat the super eagles.
Saintfiet spoke to the media at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport, Abuja as his team boarded their Arik Air flight to Calabar on Thursday afternoon.
"I am very satisfied with my squad,” Saintfiet said. “The present team is full of young players who are ready to play in the tactical way we want them to play.  Every team needs a bit of luck. The team is ready to play and I think we can recover from the flight in the next 48 hours.
"The match against the Super Eagles is not do or die affair for us. We have prepared well for this match and have an equal chance of winning the game. I believe the pressure is on Nigeria. But we will try and surprise everybody by playing a great game against Nigeria on Saturday.
"Nigeria are the champions of Africa. They are a very strong squad selected by coach Stephen Keshi. He selected a very strong team comprising of good players from Europe and local based players too. It is going to be very difficult for us. The Nigerian team has a lot of strength and quality in front of goal and are very good in the air and they can score from set pieces too.
"Despite this, the Nigerian team also has some weaknesses and we are going to use that against them,” Saintfiet disclosed.

ASUU STRIKE: 2009 Agreement with FG Has to Be Implemented 'to the Last Letter' – ASUU Insists

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) of the Benin zone has stated that the strike shall go on, unless the Federal Government returns to the 2009 ASUU/FGN agreement signed by both of the parties. The statement has been made after finishing the congress at at the Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka.

The Union has also condemned the FG of being deaf to the plight of Nigerians by not meeting their demands as contained in the MoU.
The above-mentioned statement has been signed by Emmanuel Mordi – the Chairman of DELSU ASUU, Anthony Moye-Emina – Chairman of UNIBEN ASUU, Beke Sese – Chairman of NDU ASUU, Fred Esumeh – Chairman of AAU ASUU and Sunny Ighalo – Coordinator of ASUU in the zone.
Sunny Ighalo insisted that the union was not on strike to make fresh demands, and neither was it ready to renegotiate the existing agreement.
“We are calling on the government to implement the 2009 ASUU/FGN agreement it willingly signed with the union in 2009,” he added.
This is despite the release of N100 billion by the Federal Government to ease the burdens in the universities.
But the Union accused the FG of applying “divide and rule” tactics, by trying to buy in the Committee of Pro-Chancellors and Committee of Vice Chancellors with the latest release of another N30 billion.
According to him, “though N500 billion was expected from the government based on Needs Assessment carried out and contained in the MoU of January 2012 for revitalization of the universities, government claimed it distributed N100 billion most of which were promissory notes.
ASUU zonal coordinator also noted that parents and students alike, need to understand the stance of the lecturers that it is being directed towards helping in the revitalization of the comatose education system in the country which had almost collapsed.
“This struggle, which has now entered its ninth week, is driven by the unshakable resolve of our members to stem the continuing trend with successive governments of Nigeria, to systematically destroy public education through neglect and near total abandonment.
“The strike has indeed moved into a critical stage where government is now applying the instrument of intimidation and blackmail and other gimmicks to undermine the struggle,” Ighalo said.
Gabriel Suswam, the Governor of Benue State, commented on strike on September 5, 2013, Thursday. The Governor revealed that his state’s university, Benue State University (BSU), has already received about N950 million from the N100 billion earlier released by government when he confirmed that the Federal Government had on Tuesday released another N30 billion for federal universities in the country.

Fabregas Is Extraordinary - Xavi

Barcelona midfielder Xavi has paid his respect to team-mate Cesc Fabregas following his good start to the 2013-14 campaign.

Xavi has hailed his compatriot's versatility and believes he possesses abilities no other Barcelona player has
The experienced mid-fielder also feels the former Arsenal man's versatility is vital for the Blaugrana.

Fabregas was the subject of a failed transfer bid from Manchester United over the summer after being given assurances by Gerardo Martino that he would have an important role to play for the Liga champions this season.

The 26-year-old has since started his side's title defence in top form and has been involved in six of Barcelona's 11 league goals so far, and Xavi has paid tribute to his compatriot's abilities at both creating and scoring goals for both club and country.

"Cesc is a different type of midfielder we usually see at Barca. He always adapts, he can score and he’s good for the team," Xavi told reporters.

"He’s an extraordinary and very versatile player who can play in the midfield or as a forward.

"He’s capable of giving assists, come in for the follow-up play and get in the area and score."

Both Xavi and Fabregas are currently preparing for Spain's World Cup qualifier with Finland on Friday.

It Is Bizzare, Absurd That Bianca Ojukwu Claims We Never Had An "Intimate Relationship" -Femi Fani-Kayode

Former Aviation Minister, Femi Fani-Kayode, has withdrawn the controversial comment he made a week after Bianca Ojukwu threatened to sue him for him saying they had an “intimate relationship”
READ MORE:  http://news.naij.com/46396.html

In a statement through his lawyer, Rotimi Akinola, on Thursday, Mr. Fani-Kayode accepted that he erred by making the comment but said it was “bizarre, absurd and inexplicable” that the wife of the late Biafran warlord, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu, claimed they were never acquainted.
“As our client said earlier through his press secretary some of the words he used to describe his friendship with Ambassador Ojukwu in his article titled ”A Word For Those Who Call Me A Tribalist” were indiscreet,” Mr. Fani-Kayode’s lawyer said in the statement.
“He hereby withdraws those words,” he added.
News of Mr. Fani-Kayode’s withdrawal of the comments came just as it was learnt that several concerned highly placed Nigerians were reaching out to both Mr. Fani-Kayode and Mrs. Ojukwu with a view to amicably resolving the differences between them.
One of those who initiated the peace moves but pleaded not to be named said both parties were cooperating with the efforts at reconciling them.
He said the statement by Mr. Fani-Kayode’s lawyer was part of the measures suggested by the mediators.
A few weeks ago, Mr. Fani-Kayode had written the article where he sought to allay the outrage caused by an earlier controversial piece titled ‘The Bitter Truth About the Igbos.’
In the article, Mr. Fani-Kayode had disclosed that he had had a “long standing and intimate relationship” with Mrs. Ojukwu, former beauty queen and daughter of a state governor in the Second Republic.
The claims angered Mrs. Ojukwu, Nigeria’s Ambassador to Spain, who directed her lawyers to request Mr. Fani-Kayode to retract his statement.
In his statement on Thursday, Mr. Fani-Kayode, who was also a Minister of Culture and Tourism, insisted that he knew Mrs. Ojukwu in the early to mid-80′s when he was a student at London University and Cambridge University respectively.
“They were good friends at the time and they had a few mutual friends who are still alive today,” Mr. Fani-Kayode said through his lawyer.
“The bizarre, absurd and inexplicable assertion that they were not friends and that Ambassador Ojukwu has never met our client is patently false.
“Though he has not seen her for over 25 years he spoke to her on the phone when her husband passed on last year,” he added.
Last week, Mrs. Ojukwu’s lawyers, Wall Street Attorneys threatened to commence a legal action against the controversial ex-minister if he fails to retract his comments stating that their client was “outraged” and “embarrassed” by Mr. Fani-Kayode’s claims.

'Zlatan Ibrahimovic Blasts Pep Guardiola'

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has revealed that he was 'willing to die' for Jose Mourinho, but described Pep Guardiola as a 'spineless coward'.

Ibrahimovic who played under the the instruction of Jose Mourinho at Inter Milan, says the Portuguese was an inspirational coach due to his man-management style and tactical nous.
"Mourinho would become a guy I was basically willing to die for," he wrote in his autobiography I am Zlatan Ibrahimovic, excerpts of which have been reported in the Daily Mail.
"He works twice as hard as all the rest. Lives and breathes football 24/7. I've never met a manager with that kind of knowledge about the opposing sides. It was everything, right down to the third-choice goalkeeper's shoe size.
"It was a while before I met him. He's elegant, he's confident, but I was surprised. He looked small next to the players but I sensed it immediately: there was this vibe around him.
"Mourinho created personal ties with the players with his text messages and his knowledge of our situations with wives and children, and he didn't shout. He built us up before matches. It was like theatre, a psychological game."
Ibrahimovic went on to make a big-money transfer to Barcelona in 2009, but spent just a year at Camp Nou and he blames Guardiola for his troubles.

BOKO HARAM STRIKES AGAIN: 20 Killed In Fresh Attacks In Borno

20 people have been feared dead in Borno fresh attacks by the suspected Boko Haram terrorists.
READ MORE:  http://news.naij.com/46368.html

The sect who attacked two towns were said to have started their attack by opening fire in a market and killing 15 people in Gajiran Local Government Area of Borno State and killed five others in a nearby village, Bulabulin Ngawra in Konduga LGA of the state.
It was gathered the attack which was carried out in two Local Government Areas in Borno State occurred between 10pm and 2am on Thursday.
As a result of the attacks on the two towns, surviving residents fled their homes through bush paths, according to a source.
Gajiran residents speaking to journalists in the state capital, Maiduguri said the gunmen pretended to be traders attending a local market.
“Some of them came aboard trucks while others came on foot to beat the security checks at the entrance of the town,” resident Ibrahim Bulama told AFP.
They then “blended among traders conducting business,” before opening fire in the market, killing 15 people, he told reporters.
They also set fire to a  building belonging to Ngwara LGA and a police post.
Gajiran is roughly 85 kilometres (50 miles) from the capital.
Mobile phone service has been barred in Borno since the middle of May, when the Federal Government declared a state of emergency across most of the northeast and launched an offensive aimed at crushing Boko Haram’s insurgency.
The military has said it switched off the phones to block the Islamists from coordinating attacks. It has also claimed the offensive left the insurgents in disarray and curbed their ability to attack to civilians.
While the violence has persisted amid the military campaign, the pattern of attacks suggests that the insurgents have targeted more remote regions, perhaps where the presence of security forces is reduced.
