Karrueche thrashes Chris Brown after arrest. Yup, they're broken up

Chris Brown's on-and-off again girlfriend Karrueche Tran trashed him on twitter today a few hours after it emerged that he'd been arrested for punching a man in D.C. Her reaction to the news came as a surprise to some people because their split, which happened recently, hadn't been made public.

Chris and Karrueche had a falling out about a week ago after she asked to move into Chris' LA pad. A source claims Chris flipped over the request and accused Karrueche of not being 'grateful' for everything he already does for her, and for trying to push him too hard. Chris and Karrueche  have since unfollowed each other on Twitter. Lol. Continue...

"Karrueche basically wants to move back into Chris’ house and be there and lay some roots down. She’s wasn’t trying to suffocate him or have him on lock,” a source said. “In her mind, it was just a baby step, but Chris took it the wrong way. He got really mad and told her, ‘Why can’t you just be happy with what we got?’ and ‘Why you always trying to ask for more? I do all this sh!t and you’re not grateful.’”

“He thinks she’s trying to use him. That made her cry and she was devastated that he would say some s--t like that and she left,”

"Chris acts out and this is his way of dealing with his feelings with any girl who wants to get close. He’s not good with his emotions and he doesn’t know how to act." the source revealed.

Chris and Karrueche have unfollowed each other on Twitter, and Chris kinda hinted he had broken up with her when he wrote on his twitter: (See below...)

“Hamisheh Asegh,” translates to “perpetual lover,” - that's kinda like a woman who's good enough to sleep with but nothing more.

CHARLY BOY WRITES: Haters and Losers

Charly Boy (born Charles Chukwuemeka Oputa, June 19, 1951), is a Nigerian singer/songwriter, television presenter, publisher, producer… and one of our countrie's most controversial entertainers. He's widely known for his maverick lifestyle, biker style, political views, and his television productions. In this article, he tells us how he deals with people who don't seem so enthusiastic about his lifestyle, and would often express their discontent.
The other day, I was at the departure hall at Nnamdi Azikewe airport waiting for my flight. I was tucked away at a corner, from people's preying eyes, at least so I thought. My flight was delayed, so I had about two hours to kill. As I reached into my backpack to get my iPad and keep myself busy till boarding time, a man with two teen girls approached me; they were all beaming with the most enchanting smiles I have ever seen. "Charly, these are my daughters, they've been worrying me that they want to take pictures with you." I obliged, as their father took position to capture a golden moment for his two teen daughters.
Before anyone could say 'Charly,' the boy in me jumped out. There I was clowning around, making funny faces, as the girls caught the monkeying around bug. And to everyone's entertainment and amusement, we turned the whole departure hall into a photo studio and a runway, hummm! Oh boy, come and see. All of a sudden most of the waiting passengers, teens, youths, mums and dads started to lineup for their own Kodak moments. Na who find trouble now?
It is always at times like this that I feel special and loved, and all I want to do is give back that love to all the people showing me warmth. Not too far from where I was displaying and forming model tins, from the corner of my eye, I caught a young man probably in his late 30s giving me some very dirty look. I don't think it was his frustration that got his face twisted with those hating eyes that kept piercing my smooth baby skin. Kai!!! If looks could kill, I would have been dead ten times over, no be small tin. You don't need to be psychic to know that the man is not a CharlyBoy lover, but a hater. Yesoooooooo! I may not be James Bond 007, but I assassinated that hater with my smile.
A hater is someone that just can't stand you, usually your success. They hate you for who you are. They are merchants of gossip and all malicious stories about you. They even like to recruit members into their haters club; on the Internet they hold sway. Haters hate you for your accomplishments, youthfulness, attractiveness, popularity, but guess what? Most of the time they don't even know why they hate on you. Some haters come from the lowest social ladder, they are as green and as ignorant as they come, I swear. These "winche" people are everywhere. For haters, hate is the only way they can cope and go on with their lives. They usually suffer some insecurity or inadequacies.
If you are on top your game, you must have haters, no escaping. I rather have real haters than fake fans. It is important to be mature in dealing with these prematures. Being able to sift through people's envy and bad intention towards you for the valuable truth in their criticism is often a key to being great and surviving people's bad belle and nonsensical jargon. As my head kept playing back some very famous haters in my life and how they chopped all the bullshit and the shenanigans I dished out. A beautiful middle-aged woman came to sit by my side. "I have been watching you," she said. "How do you manage with people swooping all over you like that?" referring to the short drama that just took place. "I read your articles on Linda's blog all the time, most of all I admire your courage in being your authentic self, how did you build such a thick skin?"
If I walk tall, how is that my fault? I live my life the way I please, how is that supposed to affect anybody’s peace. Shame if they think I care, shame if they think I would flair. I no send dem atall atall. Free Me!!!
Haters are usually people with little social consequence to you. See dem, yahoo boys with no laptop. They are validation that you are a big deal. The more successful you are, the stronger, the more opinionated, I tell you, and the less you will be generally liked. But Hey! Cut yourself a slack and ignore haters.
Instead, focus on turning people who like your dream to people who love your dream. I have noticed that the average or the ordinary don't get bothered by haters, only outstanding people, "weird" people, crazy people, unusual people, in short, people who don't stand up never get stoned at.
Haters hate either because they don't understand or they can't imitate. Little do they know that their hating is their sincerest form of flattery. Haters only hate things they can't get or people they can't be. For mesha! I don't have time for haters, I have ignored haters, all my life I just keep doing what I do best, treating others with love and respect always. So! Don't waste your time with this silly hating game! Because dem no see you dem no send you.

Ancelotti Defends Gareth Bale

Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti defended Gareth Bale despite his low-key performance in the 2-1 El Clasico defeat by Barcelona on Saturday, ESPN reports.

The 24-year-old winger began the game in an unfamiliar position as a striker in what was only his second start of an injury-hit season.
The £85m summer signing was replaced by Karim Benzema after an hour.
Ancelotti said, “He played well and needs to look for his team-mates’ runs. He didn’t play badly during that hour.”
Bale joined Real from Tottenham for a world record fee in the summer but foot and thigh injuries have restricted his playing time.
Ancelotti added, “I think they are his first matches and he needs to get used to playing with his team-mates, which is normal.
“It doesn’t make much difference for him to play on the right or in the middle. We started like that to put more pressure on Sergio Busquets, but after 20 minutes I changed his position to the wing to give him more room.”
Former Chelsea boss Ancelotti, who was experiencing his first Clasico, was adamant that Real should have been awarded a penalty when forward Cristiano Ronaldo went down under the challenge of defender Javier Mascherano with 20 minutes remaining.
“Naturally the penalty was very clear for me. I think everyone saw it. The only person that didn’t see it was the referee,” he said.

ASUU STRIKE: We Are Tired Of Staying At Home! - Lecturers

Now when the strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is well into its fourth month, some lecturers are coming out in the open to advocate the suspension of the industrial action.

Writing on his Facebook wall, one of the lecturers said: “He who fights and run away lives to fight another day”.
Jude Osy Nwankwo, who teaches at the University of Nigeria (UNN), admitted that the strike is taking effect on the lecturers. His words:
“We don tire. . . this strike don tire us for Nsukka o. Even traders in the market are affected by the strike. Meanwhile, how you dey cope with the strike?”
Some of the responses to Nwankwo’s post however indicated that not all lecturers are negatively affected by the strike as those in the big towns have kept themselves busy with consultancies that bring them income to cushion the effects of government’s no-work-no-pay policy. Below are excerpts:
Jude Osy Nwankwo: He who fights and run away lives to fight another day.
Golden Collins Chigoo: lolz i can see dat dis strike is takin effect on u.
Jude Osy Nwankwo: My dear, we don tire.
Adaora Uzoamaka Nwafor: Students are crying, Lecturers too are crying! ASSU bikozianu!!!!!
Manumehe Raphael Uzoma @ Adaora…. Lecturers crying? Ah! I don’t know about that oh! I think it’s the students that are crying and not the Lecturers.
Adaora Uzoamaka Nwafor: My Dear Raph, they are, it’s affecting everybody. No one is left out.
Manumehe Raphael Uzoma Adaora… It’s affecting everybody. Fine. But Lecturers are not crying. Students are, probably.
Jude Osy Nwankwo: My dear Ralph, this strike don tire us for Nsukka o. Even traders in the market are affected by the strike. Meanwhile, how you dey cope with the strike?
Manumehe Raphael Uzoma: Em, well, sorry about the situation the strike put you in. As for me? Well, I’ve been busy with one group research or the other (official) + being a Visiting Facilitator to one blue chip company or the other (unofficial).
This pretty sums up my activities during this strike period.
Manumehe Raphael Uzoma: All the aforementioned happens during the day. In the evening I conduct my Music Classes/Choir Practice for different Choirs throughout the week. Pentecostal Choirs are now inclusive. 3 Catholic Choirs, 2 Pentecostal Choirs. So, honestly, I’m not feeling the strike. Finances have run to an all time low, but I’m still pushing on.
Jude Osy Nwankwo: Lolz @Azubuike. Ralph you’re lucky to be in Ibadan. The situation is so bad in Nsukka because the students are the driving force of Nsukka economy. Nothing is happening here bro.
It will be reminded, that ASUU has embarked upon an indefinite strike June 30, 2013. The lecturers protest against the FG’s failure to honour a 2009 agreement signed between it and ASUU in 2009 pertaining to issues of university funding and improvement of infrastructure in the sector.

I Sold My CD’s at Salons to Survive – Banky W Reveals

Banky W is a renowned name in R&B industry now, but he wasn’t always among the best. There was a time the songwriter-singer was broke, struggling and unsure of success.
Read the most interesting facts of Banky W has revealed in the latest interview:
“Everybody knows me to be the Chief Executive Officer, CEO, of EME, but what people do not know is that EME started when I was in my third year in university in New York.
You see, we all dream dreams, but it is important to think very big and start where you are because God never gives you everything but gives you enough to start.
At that time, I knew I wanted to do music, but of course I understood nobody starts by selling a million CDs or the big screen!
I worked in fast foods outlets, clothing stores and as a knife salesman, selling knives from door to door. That way, I gathered money to pay for studio recording time. I was recording with a close friend at that time.
After making that music, we printed a thousand CDs though we didn’t have any fan. I had one battered car that broke down virtually everywhere, so, we would print black and white posters, stick them on the sides of the car, sell from the car’s trunk and drive to salons to do marketing.
We would walk to the owners of the salons, greet politely, and ask them to let us entertain their customers. Sometimes, some would kick us out and sometimes some would say yes. If told yes, after singing for a minute or two, we would sell our CDs to the customers! That was the beginning!
A lot of people see you on stage and see the success but do not know what you had to go through! I never had one really big break; it was always two steps forward and a couple backwards.
But I just decided that I was going to make music work for me. That was why I moved on to a new salon each time any salon rejected me!
I just kept going because I believe failure is when you give up. Albert Einstein said he tried a hundred times to make the light bulb. When he was asked what kept him going during the 99 times, he said: ‘I didn’t consider those 99 times as failure; rather, I considered them 99 ways that it didn’t work!’
We went about selling CDs and, on the days we couldn’t sell much, we would sit down and be broke together. I remember my friend was a member of a church that usually served food after service. So, on the days we didn’t sell CDs and were too broke to buy food, we would attend service in that church so we could pack rice and store in the fridge.
At a point, being a student of industrial engineering, I was working for an engineering company and was recording as well. I would go to work from 7am till about 2pm and then go to school till about 8pm, and then drive two and a half hours to New York City where the studio that would let us record for less was, and record until about 2am.
I would then drive two and a half hours back home to be back at work at 7am the following day.
One day, I was driving home from work and was so tired that I fell asleep while on a bridge. I would have driven off from the top of the bridge to God knows where, if not for an on-going construction work. God really saved me!
After a while, Banky’s hard work began to pay off and, even while in school, he began winning awards, beginning with the ‘Albany Idol’ competition. Other international awards soon followed.
In 2008 when he decided to move to Nigeria after the completion of one of his albums, Mr Capable, Banky was consistently told his genre of music ‘would never appeal to Nigerians and therefore wouldn’t ‘sell’.
As he got turned down, pressure mounted on him and his manager to change their genre of music but Banky strongly held on to another long-standing principle which had taught him to stand out by being unique rather than trying to imitate anyone’s skill.
He therefore insisted on sticking to R&B, and this paid-off as he soon became a household name in the Nigerian entertainment industry!
Banky W advice to Readers and Fans:
“You cannot say enough about the grace of God and I therefore do not want to claim any form of glory. Falling down is inevitable but getting back up is optional!
Frankly, you can’t appreciate sunshine if you’ve never been through a heavy rain. Yes, life is tough, but what do you do in those tough moments?
Do you learn the lesson, stand up again, consider yourself stronger and keep going? Or do you sit down and feel sorry for yourself?
The graveyard, they say, is the richest place in the world because therein lies so many who died with their dreams. So, my advice is, do not give up! If Banky can be where he is today, you can be where you want to be if you put to mind to it.”

'I killed my mother to make money'

Detectives attached to the Obosi Police Division in Anambra State have arrested a man, Tonna Enedo from the Umuezeshime royal family in Obosi, Idemili North Local Government Area, for allegedly killing his mother.
Enedo spoke yesterday on why he killed his mother.
He blamed the incident on his quest to make money at all cost, adding that he was lured into a fraternity. He said he has slept in the mortuary for seven hours as part of the money-making rituals.
Tonna said: “I was asked by the chief priest of the society that if I wanted to be rich, I should go and have fun with a mad woman. I should also go and sleep with a body for seven hours; I should fast for seven days dry; I was told that I would first kill my father and the last stage is that I will go mad and after I might have completed all the condition, I will become the richest man in Africa, if not in the whole world.”
He said he met all other conditions and was planning to kill his father when he mistakenly killed his mother. He said it was after he hit a metal on her head that he realised he had killed the woman he loved most.
Tonna is a first-born from a divorced home. The parents divorced in 1984. He behaved like a mentally-challenged person in and around Obosi before the incident.

Sexy Mercy Johnson Reveals All Her Inner Features

I am Mercy Johnson, an actress. I was born 29 years ago and I am the fourth child in a family of seven. My father is an ex-military officer and I left my mother at the age of two to live with him. Due to the nature of his job, he was constantly transferred from one station to another. I am proud of him because he taught me all I needed to know from childhood to adulthood.
Movie industry
I have grown with time and there have been good and bad times. There have been rumours and scandals. Sometimes, when I cry in movies, it wasn’t the script that made me cry. Rather, I reflect on my humble beginning and the height I’ve attained now. This makes me cry.
Journey into acting
After my secondary school education, I approached a friend for assistance to feature in a movie. He took me to the National Theatre, Lagos, but a role did not come until a year later. My first lead role was in a film titled, ‘The Maid.’ It was quite challenging to interprete because it was my first movie. When I saw the veterans on set, I fidgeted.
A star actress
Life is in phases and I cannot say I have reached the peak of my profession. I have not even won an Oscar yet! There is always a higher mountain to climb, a new vision to fulfill and I am at that point. I want to achieve new and greater dreams.
Fulfillment
The greatest fulfillment is the ability to influence people positively through my acting.
Challenges
Life is not a bed of roses; it comes with challenges which make me stronger and who I am.
Nollywood: Then and now
We have achieved feats which the old Nollywood did not achieve. It is all about progression and I am sure that in the future, Nollywood will achieve a greater feat than it is doing currently.
Relationship
My husband is loving and he is an understanding man. I am so happy to be married to him. I acted a movie, ‘Baby Oku in America’ when I was heavily pregnant and he didn’t feel bad about it. He understands that I am an actor and sometimes, we need real life situations, like the pregnancy, to interpret a role. Not many men would allow their wife do that.
Scandals
They are all lies. I just think the media needs to do their verification well before they put any story out. Whenever I read all manner of lies about me in the media, I wonder where all of these came from and regret being an actor. But in all, I move on and take it as one of the hazards of the job. I am fulfilled as an actor.
Mercy Johnson Foundation
I floated the foundation because of my love for the less privileged. One of my greatest joys is to see other people happy. I want to make lasting impact in my society. The objective is to identify the needs of the less privilege, evaluate them and help in our own little way. I strongly believe that as movie stars, we should live beyond the euphoria of stardom.
A sexy woman
It is inbuilt. It’s just how you feel about yourself. For me, being sexy is confidence. It mustn’t be about the hairstyle or the accessories or the big buttocks. It’s about you, liking yourself just the way you are.
Motherhood
My husband is a wonderful man. He makes my job easier and helps carry our daughter, Purity. He feeds her and she misses him whenever he is not around. As a family, we understand one another and we make whatever adjustments we have to make in order to have a good home.
Success
The challenges I faced have yielded results and I am reaping the fruits of all my efforts. I have grown from nobody in the industry to becoming a top actress from Africa. To God be all the glory.
To be an actress
Talent is never enough you must constantly brush up your talent but training can come in different form. You only need to ensure that in whatever form, you are not just relying on your inborn talent.
Projects
There are many but I’m not permitted to disclose them yet. They will start unfolding soon.
Fear
My worst fear will be to leave this earth without making a huge impact.
Fashion
I don’t wear what is in vogue or what everybody is wearing, I just wear what suits me and I’m lucky to have a physique that encourages everything I wear. My husband is a huge critic, so when he pays compliments to my dressing, I feel so good. He doesn’t believe that exposing anything makes you look better. He feels when you cover up, you look real nice.
To upcoming actors
Be yourself and let your talent speak for you. Don’t come into the industry because you want to be famous, but because you love the art of acting. Then try to appreciate those who were there before you.

Chris Brown jailed for assault in Washington

WASHINGTON (AFP) – Police said they arrested pop music star Chris Brown early Sunday and charged him with felony assault after a violent altercation outside a downtown Washington hotel.
Police spokesman Anthony Clay told AFP that Brown was arrested “around 4:25 this morning (0825 GMT) in front of the W Hotel,” a chic establishment near the White House.
Brown, along with a male companion, got into an altercation with a third man, and the incident became violent, according to police.
Brown, 24, and his companion “were arrested and charged with a felony assault. A victim was taken to the hospital and treated for his injuries,” the police spokesman said, adding that the beating victim “had injuries to his face.”
“They are still in our custody,” Clay said of the pop star and his friend, who was described by US media as the singer’s bodyguard.
Brown is the ex-boyfriend of pop singer Rihanna, with whom he has had a tempestuous on-again, off-again relationship.
He was arrested in February 2009 after getting involved in a physical confrontation with Rihanna that left her with a bruised and battered face.
He was required, after pleading guilty in court to the assault, to take part in domestic violence counseling and sentenced to five years’ probation and community service.

The Nigerian international, who is on loan at Liverpool from Chelsea, failed to make it off the bench in the teams 4-1 victory over West Brom on Saturday.
However, liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has claimed that Moses was only on the bench for “tactical reason” and said that the 22-year-old has done very well since he joined the club.
“Moses has obviously done very well for us since his arrival on loan from Chelsea,” Rodgers told ITV.
“I only dropped him (from the team that beat West Brom) for tactical reasons, he’s still very much part of the first team.”
Liverpool are currently third in the Premier League table behind leaders Arsenal.

FIFA Under-17 World Cup: Iran No Match For Eaglets, NFF Officials Boast

Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) officials have tipped the Golden Eaglets for victory in Tuesday’s round of 16 match against Iran at the Kalifa Bin Zayed Stadium in Al Ain City.
NFF assistant secretary in charge technical department, Emmanuel Ikpeme told newsmen that the Iranians were not strong enough to contend with the superior play of the Nigerians, who he said were getting better with each game.

“I see our boys getting to the final. Iran cannot withstand our boys. We are as good as already in the quarterfinal and I am sure that our boys will give a very good account of themselves on Tuesday”, said Ikpeme.

Coach Manu Garba said that Nigerians can expect more goals and improved performance from the Golden Eaglets.
The team, finished the group stage with a 5-0 spanking of Iraq at the Rashin Stadium in Dubai, to win Group F with seven points. They scored an amazing 14 goals while conceding four.

With such impressive record, the Eaglets are already one of the favourites for the title.

“We are very happy to be here so far. We thank Allah for this and think that we are on course to doing better.” We will play better in our subsequent matches. As the competition progresses the team would always get better”, added Garba.

He also admitted that the players made some mistakes in the second half in the game against Iraq because of the high intensity with which they started the match with.

“We made some mistakes even though we scored four goals in the first half. But it was so because the boys played the first 20 minutes with a lot of intensity. But we would address these issues before our next game”, Garba said.

All four African teams qualified for the Round of 16. Africa’s other representatives are African champions Cote d’Ivoire, Tunisia and Morocco.

Lost human finger found in fish after two months

A human finger that was lost for over two months was found in a fish, according to reports in the news media.

The human finger found inside a fish at Priest Lake Idaho which came from a wake boarder who lost four fingers in an accident more than two months earlier.

Fisher Nolan Calvin found the finger while cleaning the trout he caught. Put it on ice and called the Bonner County, Idaho, sheriff's office, a local newspaper reported.

Detectives were able to get a fingerprint off the finger. It matched a fingerprint card for Haans Galassi, 31, of Colbert, Washington, and police called him on Tuesday morning. The finger was in very good condition at the time of recovery, according to reports.

Investigators learned that Galassi lost four fingers of his left hand in an accident at the same lake where the fish was caught.

"The commissioner called me and he told me he had a strange story to tell me," Galassi said Tuesday. "He said that a fisherman was fishing on Lake Priest, and I pretty much knew exactly what he was going to say at that time. I was like: Let me guess, my fingers were found in a fish."

The fish was caught about eight miles from where Galassi had lost his fingers, the sheriff's office said. Galassi had been on a camping trip in the scenic lake when he decided to go wake boarding. He told the newspaper that his hand was caught in a loop in the tow rope, and could not get it out before the line tightened behind the boat.

When it finally released, he did not feel much pain. But then he looked at his hand. "I pulled my hand out of the water and that was about four fingers cut off," he said. "It was a lot of flesh and bone, not a lot of blood." He was taken by helicopter to a hospital in Spokane.

Galassi has undergone therapy twice a week for his injured hand. He still has half of his index and pointer fingers on that hand. "I can still grab things and grab and hold the steering wheel with it," Galassi said. The sheriff's office offered to return the finger, but Galassi declined.

"I'm like, 'uhhh, I'm fine,'" he said. Detective Sergeant. Gary Johnston, of the sheriff's office said the agency will keep the finger for a few weeks in case Galassi changes his mind.

"There are still three more, too," said Johnston. "It's hard to say where they will be found."

Ladies cash in at Bisbee’s Black & Blue billfish tournament: two marlin worth $1.5 million

Linda Williams becomes first woman to catch winning fish (774 pounds) in long-running Cabo San Lucas event. But the second-place catch (525 pounds) nets a far bigger payday, nearly $1.2 million

Linda Williams (right of the marlin) poses with her winning 774-pound catch. Below image shows Martha McNabb (green shirt) and her runner-up catch (525 pounds).
Linda Williams made angling history Friday afternoon by becoming the first woman to catch the winning fish in the lucrative Bisbee’s Black & Blue Marlin Tournament at Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.
Her catch of a 774-pound blue marlin, in the final hours of the three-day event, was worth $368,675 for her team aboard the yacht II Success.
But Williams wasn’t the only woman smiling afterward. Martha McNabb and her team, which had held first place with a 525-pound marlin until Williams’ fish was weighed, was worth $1,185,862.
The payday was bigger because the team had entered more side jackpots in an event that draws teams of mostly wealthy anglers from around the world.
Williams, who is from Alta Loma, California, was fishing with her long-time skipper, Kevin Pahl, and mates Antonio Zuniga Ruiz, David Reed, Craig Pani, and her friend, Jan Howard.

McNabb is from the Cabo San Lucas area and was fishing aboard the yacht Retriever. It’s the second time she has finished runner-up after being edged on the final day of what’s billed as “the world’s richest sportfishing tournament.” Williams’ marlin was brought to the scale 10 minutes before the tournament concluded.
But it’s remarkable that women finished first and second, considering that men have dominated this annual tournament since it was first staged in 1981.
“I think this week we showed what lady anglers can do,” Williams said afterward. “We can compete on this level without question.”
Her marlin, caught after a nearly two-hour fight, was the second-heaviest qualifying fish in tournament history.
“It was a fish of a lifetime and one definitely on my bucket list,” Williams said. “I love this tournament and I love the people.”
The Bisbee’s tournament paid through fifth place. Only marlin weighing 300 pounds were allowed to be kept, and teams that brought in fish under the weight limit were penalized.
Depending on the number of entries ($5,000 base entry per team), and various side jackpots entered, the Bisbee’s purse has varied. The largest overall cash payout was $4,165,960 in 2006.
Not all of the money goes to the anglers. The tournament has raised more than $600,000 for local charities, and last year more than $200,000 was donated to charity.

LAGOS: How Owners Of Private Wooden Bridges Make Millions Of Naira Daily

From generation to generation, ordinary Lagosians have been capitalizing upon the absence of link bridges and decent roads in the city. For over 40 years, such investors have constructed wooden bridges, popularly called pako bridges, across the state, and tolled users. In recent years, the involvement of people in this business has reached an unprecedented level in recent years.
In places where the toll bridges exist, pedestrians are tolled N30 each, while motorists pay N200 per vehicle. Besides, each occupant of the vehicle aside from the driver, is also required to pay N30.
Meanwhile, the feeling has been mixed for users and residents that benefit from the linkages provided by such bridges.
While most users cringe at the weight of the tolls imposed by the investors, they acknowledged the importance of such bridges in connecting communities and opening up new areas.
Many of the bridges are constructed over swamps, where only brave residents dared trudge across prior to the construction of the bridges.
So, in spite of the heavy tolls on the communities, some of which are poor, residents have resigned to fate, particularly with the government not showing interest in their situation.
Some examples of the toll bridges are found in Alimosho Local Government Area, linking Ashipa, Ayobo-Ipaja community to Igando community; Lanre through Sanni Thomas Street to Igando New town; Igesu and Egan communities; Baruwa inside community and Diamond Estate; Obadore and Ijagemo communities; Abegunrin and Idowu-Egba; and Pako community to Ketu community.
A visit to some of the bridges showed a similar mode of construction but varying physical conditions and modes of operation. Each bridge also posed its own peculiarity based on the environment it is sited.
The bridges at Ashipa-Igando and Lanre through Sanni Thomas Street to Igando New Town were estimated at around 300 metres each, while the Igesu-Egan bridge was estimated to be around 540 metres.
A small neighbourhood market had formed at the foot of the Ashipa end of the toll footbridge connecting the community to Igando. Residents descending the bridge into their community or transiting beyond Ashipa could get groceries, pepper, vegetables, and other items like footwear. Commercial motorcylists have also turned the feet of the bridge into major parks.
A resident of Ashipa, Mr. Lukman Mudasiru, said the bridge was constructed some 20 years ago.
“But before then, we used to tread the water or practically swim to cross over to the other side, even though, it was deep. Only the brave could try it then. Many people would pull off their clothes and put them on their heads to prevent them from getting wet,” he said.
Mudasiru said the other option was to spend a much longer time to reach a community just across the swamp, adding that the infamous bad roads in the area has continued to give the bridge relevance. According to him, the bridge also serves people coming from or going as far as Ogun State from Lagos.
He said, “The bridge has opened up this area and aided development. The route is shorter for people working in Ikeja or even Lagos Island and living in far distances like Ejigbo, Olorunisola and Ishefun. Instead of spending hours going through Ayobo-Ipaja, which has very bad roads, they come through here.
“Even people living in places as far as Ota, Aiyetoro and Lafenwa in Ogun State or returning there after work pass through here. The only problem is that it’s a pedestrian bridge; we need one that will accommodate cars.”
Human traffic is often busy on the bridge, especially during peak hours. A number of beggars, also attracted by the number of users, sit on the bridge to solicit help.
The bridge is open between 4 and 12am everyday and has a gatehouse, where users pay tolls. It is understood that the bridge ought to open officially between 5am and 11.30pm, but for the pressure of users who wake up early to beat the morning traffic. So, electric bulbs supported by wooden stands and cables run the length of the bridge to provide light when it is dark.
“The bridge is always busy and there is a generator which is used to power the bulbs, so we see one another at night,” added Mudasiru.
But not everyone shared Mudasiru’s enthusiasm for the bridge.
Another resident, Alani Ogunlade, said the situation could get tricky for someone who could not afford the toll.
He said, “It’s not every time that people have money to pass, so sometimes, it can cause a serious issue. Some could decide to stay at home while some would want to force their way through.”
The traditional ruler of Ashipa, Baale Ayemojuba of Ashipaland, Chief Mudasiru Amusa, was even less enthusiastic about having a toll bridge within his community. He said the community had laid planks on the swamp before the bridge construction, but, however, admitted the overwhelming volume of the water, particularly during rainy seasons.
Amusa said he often suffers “heartaches” seeing his people being tolled on the way to and from their community.
He said, “It saddens me every time to see my people suffer like that, having to pay each time they leave the community or come in, but there is nothing I can do. I pity people who have to pay N60 to leave their home and come back and even spend more when they need to go out more than once.
“What we want is for the government to come in and build a concrete bridge for us so that people can enjoy the service without being ripped off. The queue in the morning on the bridge is massive. Many of such bridges are springing up in Lagos now. Many people are going into the business because of the huge profit in it. All the people working there (at the bridge) have grown big tummies.”
The bridges are either directly managed or contracted out to someone under an agreement to remit a certain amount daily to the investor.
It was learnt that Ashipa toll bridge was contracted out and investigation showed that about N250,000 is being remitted daily by the managers to the investor.
“About three years ago, it was N180,000 that was being remitted daily but today, it’s around N250,000. The police also come on Fridays to get their share from the managers,” a source close to the managers of the bridge, said.
However, the workers at the bridge declined to comment, insisting that the manager was not around.
Normally, the operation of the pako toll bridges involves identifying the communities in need of a linkage, usually separated by water or swamp, buying the land from the land speculators (omo onile) and putting the construction in place. Then the bridges have to be periodically maintained to prevent any mishap.
Investigation showed that one of the major wooden materials needed in large quantities for the bridge construction are the 4 by 2 hardwood and the 4 by 12 ft plank, locally called ‘Eki’ wood. It is said to be the best under the circumstance because it grows in water.
There have been reported cases of disputes over control and ownership of some of the bridges, particularly when the investor has to deal with more than one family (omo onile) in the process of buying the land or when too many people are involved in its operation.
A classical case is the multi-use wooden transit bridge at Lanre, which could accommodate automobiles. Some parts of the bridge appeared to be badly depressed, giving motorists undulating rides.
Investigation showed that the bridge was being managed by Mr. Oladipo Omojolowo, but that there was a dispute over its ownership and control, which were said to be in court.
The Chairman, United Ifesowapo Community Development Area and aggregate Chairman of Igando New Town CDAs, Mr. Sanni Thomas, said the dispute was responsible for the poor maintenance of the bridge.
He said, “The person managing the bridge now doesn’t want to fix the bridge since the case is in court and no one knows what the outcome will be.”
Thomas added that the idea of putting the bridge had sounded noble to community members, but that eight years on, the community had experienced more pains than gains.
He said, “Ordinarily, it could have been a very good business and it could have helped the community. Initially, what they (investors) told the community was that they wanted to link the road so that our children could go to school on the other side. So, the initial impression was that it would benefit the community but we’re not benefiting from it. The bridge brings a lot of traffic to the community that sometimes, we can’t even get into our own houses.
“The traffic damages our road quickly and it’s the CDA that’s taking care of the road without any support from the people collecting tolls from the bridge. It’s the same community that’s paying the security men patrolling the area and overseeing the bridge as well. It’s wrong that they toll the people and make so much from the community, and yet, can’t assist with grading the roads in the community. And the development and markets we thought it would bring did not happen; people don’t stop here, they go straight to Lanre. Same for the commercial motorcyclists.”
Also, Thomas said that vehicles sometimes fall off the bridge inside the swamp, spending days before they are removed.
Another resident on Sanni Thomas Street leading to the bridge, David Adigun, called on the government to “come to the aid of the community and construct a proper bridge.”
Enforcement seemed to be harder on the multi-use pako bridges since the attendants have to deal with pedestrians, motorists, motorcyclists and tricycle riders.
It was observed that to enforce payment of tolls, particularly from motorists and motorcyclists, attendants often had to close the gate to stop stubborn vehicle owners from passing through.
A mild drama ensued when a woman who identified herself as Alhaja Rasida, refused to pay for her children, none of who was older than seven years old. She insisted that she would not pay “a kobo” more than the N260 she was willing to pay for herself and two adults in the vehicle.
She later told Saturday PUNCH after about five minutes of having a tussle with the attendants, which she won. “How could they say they would collect N90 on these little children too? It’s N200 for a vehicle and N30 for each occupant apart from the driver, but I’d never agree to pay an additional N90 on these little children. The money is too much; it’s killing us. What kind of rubbish is that? Who gave them the rubbish permission to stand here and collect money?”
A source in the community said the bridge generates about N400,000 daily.
However, a lady at the office of Omojolowo, which was in the neighbourhood, said her boss was “not in town at the moment.”
Many owners and managers of the toll bridges live big in their communities. For instance, residents said Omojolowo’s house and office, which sit opposite each other on Oladipo Omojolowo Street, Igando New Town, easily dwarf other buildings on the street.
Residents, meanwhile, said Omojolowo’s fortune changed about seven years ago when he got into the business.
A resident who did not want to be named, said, “He used to work as a caretaker and later started selling palm-wine. His house was even draped in polythene bags. But things looked up for him when he linked up with others to start the tolling business.”
Meanwhile, a new multi-use pako toll bridge had just opened at Igesu, linking the community to Egan. A source in the area said the owner had invested about N33m in the project.
The bridge was new, so it was firmer and looked much neater, with modern lights to aid visibility for motorists at night.
A resident, Akeem Olawale, said going to Sango, Ogun State, from Egan would not take more than one hour using the bridge, while the other known alternative would not take less than two hours, if the traffic is light.
He said, “The bridge assists us to beat traffic. The road around here is very bad, so if you’re not taking the bridge to Sango, for instance, it will mean going round from Egan through Iyana-Ipaja and that could take close to more than two hours if there is no traffic.”
Efforts to reach the Chairman of Alimosho Local Government Area, in which many of the bridges fall, Mr. Israel Adekunle, were unsuccessful.
He did not answer his phone nor respond to a text message sent to his mobile line.
The State Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, however, told our correspondent that private initiatives were an important part of the environment.
He said, “Private initiatives are always necessary in all human endeavours in all societies. That is why there are private hospitals, schools and all others. As long as there are options, private initiatives will always be available.
“Remember, the state is adding to her infrastructure portfolio regularly. Can the deficit be eliminated in a year? No. So we have to keep attacking, which is exactly what the state is doing.”
The tale of toll bridges and roads in Lagos already appears to be twofold. While the wooden bridges on one side, service a section of the state that is largely dominated by modest dwellings, the tolled Lekki-Ikoyi suspension bridge and the Lekki-Epe Expressway are servicing another section believed to be living in more affluence.
For instance, the Lekki-Ikoyi link bridge which opened to the public in May 2013, did so amid controversies. Motorists are required to pay N250 toll on each car to use the suspension bridge, which the state government said it had handed over to a concessionaire. The proposal to toll the bridge had generated a prolonged debate by the state lawmakers at a plenary session, but the state government went ahead to open the bridge nonetheless.
Earlier, the controversial tolling on the 49.36km Lekki-Epe Expressway was also stiffly rejected by residents when the first of the toll gates was introduced at the Lekki Admiralty Way area in 2011. The state government claimed that the tolling was necessary because the reconstruction of the road was done under a concession deal with a private company. The controversial agreement signed between the parties was worth N50bn, with motorists paying N120 and N150 as toll on each car and SUV, respectively.
However, the state government recently said it had bought back the deal from the Lekki Concession Company Limited ahead of the 30-year period stipulated in the design, build, operate and transfer concession agreement.
