Women Charged For Every Scream During Childbirth in Hospital

A hospital charges mothers-to-be $5 every time they scream while giving birth, according to an extensivenew report from Transparency International on corruption around the world.
It is not a joke, a local hospital in Zimbabwe has '$5 hospital screaming fee', purportedly a charge for “raising false alarm” but clearly aimed at separating mothers from their money.
Zimbabwe, one of Africa’s poorest countries, has only $500 of gross domestic product per capita, average annual income per person is about $150.
Zimbabwean hospitals also charge a $50 delivery fee. This means that, in a country where underemployment is 95 percent and poverty is rife, a mother who screams a few times during delivery might owe half her annual income after giving birth.
According to a follow-up by Transparency International, women who can’t afford the high fees are sometimes detained at the hospital and charged interest until their family can pay up. As a result, many Zimbabwean mothers give birth at home because they can’t afford the charges. The United Nations reports that, on average, eight mothers die during childbirth every single day in Zimbabwe.
Transparency International says its Zimbabwe office contacted the national health ministry about the issue by sending, as such offices often require, a formal letter. The health ministry said it had received the letter, then apparently did nothing, and when the NGO followed up an official told the organization that they had lost the letter.
Finally, a member of Transparency International was able to meet with Zimbabwe’s deputy prime minister, who promised to look into. Since then, the NGO says, it’s heard no more complaints about screaming charges – although the $50 delivery charge, impossibly expensive for many in Zimbabwe, remains.

“I Like Much Older Guys, Am I Crazy?”

I have dated guys that are my age and I have enjoyed their personalities and had (somewhat) successful relationships and although I was attracted to them, I never felt like I was in love.
I just find older guys physically appealing. I get really turned on by grey hair and male pattern baldness. And dare I even say the slight paunch that men get when they are older.
I have not found a man in his 20s or 30s attractive in a few years now. This is pretty weird, because I am definitely a young-looking 26 year old, and I am quite fit, dress for my age, often get approached by guys my age etc.
I would not say I am craving the security and stability that comes with being older or dating someone who is older, although those are things most people who would like a relationship would logically desire… including me.
By the way, this is definitely not “Daddy Issues.” My parents have a long, healthy, happy marriage and I come from a very close-knit loving family.
It’s also definitely not financial. I am pretty successful and independent (have lived by myself and paid my own way since 18), and do not want someone to take care of me or buy me things in order to feel appreciated. Nor do I feel at this stage that I want to be nurtured and treated in a juvenile manner.
I am currently dating a man who is 41. We started dating about 3 years ago and I originally lied to him and said I was a young-looking 30 year old for our first three dates so he would take me seriously — we met through online dating. Although I love him dearly and think he is very attractive, I still find men that are much older than him more appealing. Like around 60 would be ideal for me.
I’ve tried talking to my best and closest girl friends about this, and they usually just laugh it off as a joke. But I’m being serious. I am considering leaving my current relationship because these feelings are causing me to feel a bit distracted. I think I should try pursue this. I am worried about what my family and friends will think.
Everyone knows I have always liked older men, but I’m afraid that dating anyone older might cause my parents to have… um… heart attacks.
Do I need help? AM I CRAZY?!

3 die as fire razes house in Cross River

Three persons lost their lives as fire gutted a house in Ohong Community, Obudu Local Government Area of Cross River State.
The occurrence ended up throwing the whole community into grief and mourning.
The incident, which occurred at about 7:30 pm, reportedly took the lives of three siblings who were said to be two boys and a girl.
Community Mirror learnt that the fire was caused by a generator which the father of the deceased, Mr. John Ugem just put on after the PHCN tripped off public electricity supply.
John and his wife, including one of their wards, were sitting outside when the fire erupted.
It was gathered that the power generating set had been on for about 30 minutes, before it malfunctioned.
An eyewitness, Mr. Sunday Ugbe said there was a sudden spark which ignited the generator and engulfed the frontage of the building, blocking the three siblings indoors.
Sympathizers attempted to force the windows and door open to rescue the kids, but were repelled by the huge fire, smoke and heat emanating from the fire.
The fire was said to have defied all efforts by neighbours to put it out, as there were reserved containers of petrol in the house. John, who out of desperation broke into the house through one of the back windows, got trapped by the inferno, but was later rescued.
As at press time, he was still recuperating at the Obudu Sacred Heart Hospital.

Mistake causes 24-year-old twins to reunite after being separated at birth

A young woman knew she was adopted. She was told that her birth mother had abandoned her on the streets of China, when she was a baby.

But she knew nothing about her birth family and she certainly did not know that she was left on the street together with her identical twin sister, who was adopted by another family.

Bao Lulin, 24, was confused when strangers stopped her on the street and call her by another name. Liulin had some uncomfortable encounters by being confused with someone named Yanfei. One time a stranger asked her about her trip to a place she had never visited.

On several occasions people were upset that she did not recognize them. Three years ago, she was approached by four women while working at her family’s fruit stand. The women spoke to her as if they knew her. "Have you just returned from the Fujian province?” They asked. “Why didn’t you inform us?" They demanded.

When Lulin asked who they were, one of them said: “You must be earning big money, and you do not want to us know.” Having once again been confused by the mysterious woman Yanfei, she decided it was time to locate her look-alike. Then she became pregnant and put things on hold. She gave birth to a baby boy.

After a while she decided it was time to look for Yanfei. When another woman mentioned to Lulin that she looked just like the woman’s relative, Lulin asked her for Yanfei’s address. When she met Yang Yanfei she discovered that they were twin sisters. The Chinese sisters met for the first time since birth. "I felt I was looking in the mirror," Yanfei said.

Their looks are not the only similarities. They both got married in 2007 and both husbands have the same name, Bin. They also share the same hobbies, clothing style and taste for food. Bao said: "We feel we've known each other for years and years." They are very happy to share their life with each other.

The Owner Of The Bubayaro FC Who Lost 67-0 Has Denied His Team

The owner of suspended Nigerian amateur side, Bubayaro FC, Shuaibu-Gara Gombe, has disowned and disbanded the club after their 67-0 loss at the hands of Police Machine.
Gombe, who was in Lagos when the game was played, said he had ordered the team not to play the match but he was ignored by team officials.
“As soon as I heard the result I disbanded the team. It’s disappointing that some people would bring the game to disrepute out of desperation,” Gombe told BBC Sport. He added, “I have written a petition to the (state) police in Bauchi to investigate this shame and arrest anyone found to be involved.”
Police Machine were trying to score more goals than Plateau United Feeder, who were playing Akurba, in the race to win promotion to the lowest tier of the Nationwide League Division.
As information about scorelines was swapped between the two venues, which were about 4km apart, the madness began in the second halves.
A journalist, who does not want to be identified to protect his own safety, was at one of the matches last Saturday, and told BBC Sport that things went bizarre in the second half. Feeders scored 72 of their goals in the second half, while Police Machine found the net 61 times after the break in their game.
“In the second half we started witnessing outrageous own goals, free-kicks and terrible goalkeeping,” he said. “Feeders blasted goal after goal past Bubayaro. Officials of the club turned into emergency ball boys, instead of retrieving the ball from the net, they quickly threw another ball into the centre-circle.
“It was ridiculous, because the losing side [Bubayaro] didn’t make any effort and the officiating was abysmal with controversial calls being made and unaccounted additional minutes played. “Some people were on their mobile phones updating officials at the other venue. (It was) a shameful scene at that.”
Even when an official did try and take action he was thwarted. “The coordinator of Bauchi centre was threatening to arrest all the people involved but players and officials disappeared after the game,” the journalist continued.
The result would have meant Plateau Feeders were promoted on goal difference. But the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) suspended the four teams on Tuesday and has set up a panel to investigate the obvious match-fixings.

11 and 7 Year Old Boys Arrested For Stealing Car From Woman With Gun

Two young boys showed that they were able to plan and execute an armed carjacking, according to police reports.

The two children, ages 7 and 11, are accused of trying to rob a woman with a loaded gun, police said Sunday.

The boys tried to carjack a 22-year-old woman, who was in her family car waiting for her parents in a church parking lot, police in Portland, Oregon, said in a statement.

Ami Garrett, from southeast Portland, told police officers that when the boys approached her, the younger boy told the older boy to "show his moves."

The woman said that when she refused to give her car, they demanded cash and her phone. She said that as she walked away, she saw the 11-year-old pull a gun from his pocket.

The boys were arrested in the parking lot by officers responding to reports of children with guns. Police said they recovered a loaded .22 caliber pistol in the pocket of the older boy.

Detectives were investigating how the boys got the gun. Because of their young age, the boys could not be taken into custody at a juvenile detention center, so they were returned to their families, police said.

The 11-year-old, tried to escape from his parents' home, but was quickly captured by officers and returned to his parents. Police plan to take the case to the juvenile court.

Boko Haram members are not Muslims

The Anambra State chapter of the Nigeria Supreme Council of Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) has disowned members of the Boko Haram sect, saying that unless they stop killings innocent Nigerians, they would not be recognised as Muslims.
In a statement made available to journalists yesterday in Onitsha to mark the beginning of this year’s Ramadan fast, NSCIA Vice- President, Alhaji Dauda Onuorah Ajagu, asked the Boko Haram members to obey the Federal Government’s plea to shun their violent activities.
Ajagu reminded them that the Holy Koran and the Book of Prophet Mohammed condemned violence in any form, adding that even God asked Muslims in many verses of Holy Koran to love one another and their Christian brothers since the nearest person to a Moslem is a Christian.
He said: “What we want in Nigeria is peace, unity and love for one another so that Nigeria can move forward. Let everybody think what he can do for Nigeria and not what Nigeria can do for him.
“We urge Nigerians to unite for the progress of the country. With unity, we will maintain our dignity this time around. If we obey the law of the land and that of Allah, Nigeria will not only be the giant of Africa, but the giant of the black race”.
Ajagu, however, commended the Federal Government and the Nigerian Embassy in China for erecting an ultra-modern embassy building at Beijing in China. President Goodluck Jonathan commissioned the embassy yesterday.
He also prayed for God’s abundant blessings on the Nigerian Ambassador to China, the Nigerian Defense AttachĂ© and the entire embassy’s workers.

$15million Dollars bribe money.. Full Story Exposed

A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja yesterday fixed September 20 for judgement in a suit filed by the Federal Government to claim the $15 million bribe money by former Delta State governor, James Onanefe Ibori.
Ibori allegedly offered the money as a bribe to the pioneer chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, to stop his trial for corruption.
The fund is presently in the custody of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN.
The trial judge, Justice Gabriel Kolawole, fixed the date after taking arguments from opposing parties in the case.
The money has been kept in the CBN vault since 2007, owing to denial by Ibori.
But last year, the Federal Government approached a Federal High Court to give order that the money be forfeited to it.
The court had already issued an interim order threatening to grant the Federal Government request if the real owner did not show up within a stipulated period.
But before the expiration of the judicial ultimatum, the Delta State Government came to court to lay claim to the fund, notwithstanding that Ibori had distanced himself from the money.
While the drama was ongoing, a Lagos-based refrigerator repairer, Olalekan Bayode, had applied to the court that he be appointed as a manager to disburse the $15 million bribe money to the indigents, especially widows and orphans through a charitable organisation.
However, Kolawole dismissed his application for a joinder cum intervener in the suit for the money to be released to him for being frivolous and lacking in merit.
The judgment was affirmed at the Court of Appeal.
At the resumed hearing of the case yesterday, the Attorney-General of Delta State, Mr. Charle Ajuyah (SAN), identified controversy over the ownership of the fund as the main issue in the case.
He said: “It is only Delta State that has indicated real interest in this money and the document we have attached shows sufficient nexus between Delta State and the money.”
One of the exhibits tendered in court was a statement made by the EFCC Chairman, Ibrahim Lamorde, where he stated that the cash came into the possession of commission through Ibori who offered it as bribe to stop his prosecution.
Ajuyah also said that count-66 of the 170-count charge filed against Ibori at the court also specifically spoke about how the money was exchanged.
He added that all the affidavit evidence showed that there was no controversy between the Federal Government and the EFCC about the ownership of the money.

Newly married man stabbed to death

A newly married man, Lawal Bala, was yesterday stabbed and killed while relaxing in his house at Layin Sidi, Gangare in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The incident happened shortly after Bala returned from work.
The 30-year-old butcher screamed and staggered outside with a knife stuck in his neck.
A witness, who craved anonymity, claimed she saw the deceased outside his house with a knife protruding from his neck while his wife, Maryam Yahaya, was shouting “they have killed my husband”.
Hundreds of sympathisers gathered in front of the house of the deceased; some were crying while others said his wife must be produced.
Policemen from C Division, Jos, took the corpse to the Plateau State Hospital for post-mortem while his wife was taken to the police station.
Some youths accused Maryam of complicity in her husband’s killing.
“Why did she attempt to run away; why didn’t she scream?” one of them asked.
But the late Bala’s elder brother, Alhaji Hamza Dikko, who is the chairman of Butchers Association, Gangare Ward and the ward chairman of the All Nigeria Peoples Party, ANPP, said: “Lawal never complained to me about his wife.
“Their marriage was exactly one month this Saturday and we were at the mosque for Zuhur prayer earlier in the afternoon.”
A friend of the deceased, Zakaria Aliyu, said “we were together this afternoon. Then 40 minutes later, someone called to tell me that Lawal has been killed; that a knife was used to slit his throat”.
Aliyu described the deceased as “a very calm person. I cannot tell you that Lawal has enemies. We grew up together and Lawal will not hurt a fly”.
“On hearing the news, I immediately went to the house and there was blood everywhere I just couldn’t look at him, we then went to the Gangare police station to report the matter,” he added.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Felicia Anslem, confirmed the incident.
She said: “Some armed men went to the house of Lawal Bala while he was with his wife and used a machete to slit his throat. However, investigation is still on to get to the root of the matter.”
A source at the C Division explained that Bala’s wife “is a very young girl, not more than 17 years old”.

Woman pleads guilty to providing her husband with sèx slave

A woman went searching the world of sèx slavery in order to provide her husband with a sèx slave, according to court proceedings.

The woman, accused of forcing a teen girl to be a sèx slave for her husband over several years in their mobile home, pleaded guilty Thursday to one federal charge of conspiracy in a deal contingent on her being sentenced to probation.

Marilyn Bagley, 47, admitted that she helped prepare the child to be a sèx slave for her husband after the teen came to the couple's trailer in February 2003, in southwest Missouri. She started living there intermittently last year.

Bagley, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit sèx trafficking in exchange for prosecutors dropping all other charges against her and to recommend that she only serves probation. If the judge rejects the recommendation, she may again plead not guilty and go to trial. There was no indication when the judge would rule on the matter.

Prosecutors said the girl was a mentally deficient runaway who was recruited at the age of 16. Bagley said the girl moved in when she was 17 and never had sèx with her husband until after the age of 18.
Prosecutors said the couple promised the girl, who grew up in foster care, "the good life" and would help her become a model, dancer and make her "dreams come true.”

Federal authorities began investigating the couple after the victim was taken to a hospital in cardiac arrest. Prosecutors said it happened while she was being suffocated and electrocuted during a torture session.

Marilyn Bagley told news reporters last year that the victim collapsed while getting ready for work, not while being tortured. The couple had claimed that the sexual acts, including some classified by the government of torture, were agreed as part of her sèxbondage, sadism and masochism lifestyle, in which she said that the girl was a willing participant.

Drug Dealer Burns His Fingers By Himself To Avoid Prosecution

One of Columbia’s last drug kingpins — who reigned over a 400-ton-a-year cocaine empire and funneled cash to terror groups — was hauled into a New York City courtroom Wednesday.
Daniel Barrera, 44, who authorities say was one of the largest cocaine traffickers in history, was extradited to the U.S. on Tuesday.
He lorded over a “behemoth cocaine organization” and “operated at the center of a truly evil web spun between his narcotics trafficking organization and two violent and sworn enemy terrorist organizations,” U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara said.
Barrera provided money to the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, and the Autodefensas Unidas de Colombia, or UAC, Bharara said.
“This was truly cocaine with blood in its background,” he said.
Prosecutors say they have developed a mountain of evidence against the cosmetically enhanced drug lord, who allegedly had several plastic surgeries and tried to burn off his fingerprints with acid to mask his identity.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Jenna Dabbs told U.S. District Judge Alvin Hellerstein on Wednesday that authorities had “reports and photographs” documenting the seizures of Barrera’s cocaine off the coast of Florida and in Venezuela.
Daniel 'Loco' Barrera tried to burn off his fingerprints with acid to mask his identiy. The Colombian cocaine kingpin has finally been hauled into a U.S. federal court in New York.

Daniel 'Loco' Barrera tried to burn off his fingerprints with acid to mask his identiy. The Colombian cocaine kingpin has finally been hauled into a U.S. federal court in New York.

Barrera, dressed in a white polo shirt and gray jeans, betrayed no emotion as Dabbs referenced his once-sprawling empire. In fact, the kingpin known as “The Madman” acted like a perfect gentlemen in court, speaking softly and politely to Hellerstein.
“Yes, your honor,” he said through a Spanish interpreter when asked if he understood the charges.
Barrera pleaded not guilty to conspiracy to import narcotics, and his lawyer did not ask for bail.
“They are very serious charges,” lawyer Ruben Oliva said outside the courthouse. “He is being accused of very serious crimes.”
Agents for the Drug Enforcement Administration arrested Barrera in Venezuela on Sept. 18, 2012. Venezuelan authorities seized houses, ranches, a yacht, apartments and 48 cars belonging to Barrera, officials said.
Selling four hundred tons of cocaine a year, Daniel Barrera was one of the largest traffickers of the drug in history, U.S. authorities say.

Selling four hundred tons of cocaine a year, Daniel Barrera was one of the largest traffickers of the drug in history, U.S. authorities say.

He was returned to Colombia before getting extradited to New York.
Barrera is accused of laundering tens of millions of dollars as he processed about 400 tons of raw cocaine into cocaine powder each year since 1998. Authorities say Barrera manufactured the cocaine at laboratories he operated in a remote section of Colombia controlled by the UAC.
At the same time, he was buying the raw cocaine base from the rival FARC terror group, prosecutors say.
“If any one case epitomizes the nexus between terrorism and drug trafficking and the destructive impact on Colombian society, this is it; not to mention the crime and suffering cocaine addiction has fueled on the demand-side of the equation in the streets of New York,” said NYPD Commissioner Raymond Kelly.
Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos has called Barrera “the last of the great capos.”
If convicted, Barrera faces up to life in prison.
Barrera also faces charges in federal court in Miami, his next stop after his New York cases are completed.

Forget Boko Haram, Lagosians live in the fear of kidnappers

Before now, the notoriety of kidnappings was loudest in the South-South and South-East regions of Nigeria because of neglect by the government and mass unemployment. But FRANCIS SUBERU reports that the crime has assumed new dimensions in Lagos and other parts of the country.
Fears of two criminal activities gripped Lagos, Nigeria’s former capital city and the commercial and economic hub of the country in the second quarter of this year. While the first, a rumoured planned attack of the Boko Haram terrorist group, was nipped in the bud, the other, kidnapping for ransom, gained ground and is still keeping residents on the edge.
Lagos, hitherto thought to be impenetrable to kidnappers, suddenly became the focal point and hot bed of the criminals, who abduct high profile personalities and even ordinary citizens, such that no week passes without an incident being reported.
This new form of criminality is fast replacing armed robbery, as more and more hoodlums see it as much more financially rewarding.
Generally, kidnapping is taking somebody away subtly or forcefully against his will; usually to hold the person in false imprisonment, a confinement without legal authority. A ransom is demanded and often paid before the person regains his freedom. It might equally be done in furtherance of another crime, especially when parties are involved in a dispute.
The booming crime of kidnapping in Nigeria is new to Lagosians. It started in the Niger Delta in the late 1990s and gained notoriety towards the end of the last decade as agitators and activists who later became militants used it as a means of getting government’s attention to environmental degradation in the region. Then, kidnapping was seen as a form of protest against the federal government and the international oil companies (IOCs) operating in the region. The kidnappers concentrated on abducting expatriates and oil workers in the Niger Delta but things soon went out of hand when disgruntled youths and criminals in the Aba axis of Eastern region embraced the crime.
Experts say that many factors, including government’s failure to provide basic economic and social safety nets for the citizens, mass youth unemployment, political brigandage, cultism, gangsters, family breakdown and moral laxity in the face of duplicitous religion as well as inefficient and corrupt security system are some of the reasons why kidnapping strives in Nigeria.
Of all these factors, the one that clearly stands out is the politicians’ involvement. Many security experts are of the view that if solution is to be found to kidnapping problem in Nigeria, the federal government must take drastic steps to withdraw all the guns and ammunition given by politicians to their thugs while contesting for elections.
But even as kidnapping became more profitable than armed robbery, the criminals made headlines with their loots elsewhere in the country, which Lagosians only read and listened to in the media. But all that has changed.
The hoodlums didn’t wait for long before announcing their infamous grand arrival recently with the kidnapping of the Chairman of Ejigbo Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Mr. Kehinde Bamigbetan, who was abducted on his way home from work. He was held for four days and was only released when a ransom of N15million was paid.
Before Bamigbetan, a student of the American International School, Ikoyi, was similarly kidnapped on Lagos Island while on his way to school. Initial report was that the pupil was abducted together with the family driver who was with him at the time of the incident.
The victim, whose identity was deliberately shielded, is an eleventh grade student of the school. Both parents, who are American citizens were said to be out of the country at the time of the incident and had to quickly return to be part of negotiations with the kidnappers to free their son. After two weeks, the victim was rescued by policemen attached to Ikoyi Division inside a forest at Ilaro, Ogun State.
The rescue operation however was very intricate and fatal as one of the kidnap suspects was reportedly killed in the shootout; just as a police officer was reportedly stabbed twice by the kidnappers while attempting to avoid being captured.
Surprisingly, the alleged mastermind of the kidnapping was said to be the same family driver conveying the teenager to school. The driver was identified as Adebayo John. It had earlier been thought that the driver was abducted together with the boy.
It was however not clear whether the kidnappers succeeded in collecting all or part of the N60m ransom demanded from the boy’s parents.
Yet another incident was that of Kemisola Ogunyemi, who was kidnapped at about 8.30pm in Ajah, Lagos on February 10 this year. Kemisola was kidnapped about a minute’s drive to her Abraham Adesanya Estate home at Ajah.
Before the incident, Kemisola and her husband were new tenants, as they had lived less than one month in the estate.
Eye witnesses told National Mirror that Kemisola was trailed to the Jeffery Plaza, Ajah, by some people suspected to be kidnappers who suddenly drove their vehicle in front of her Murano Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) and blocked the car. They said the kidnappers shot into the air sporadically as they forcelly opened the car, took over the steering and sped off with Kemisola still inside the vehicle.
She was eventually released after being held for a week following the payment of an undisclosed ransom.
Interactions with suspected kidnappers by our correspondent revealed that there are three major kinds of kidnappings.
The first is those involving high profile personalities such as the mother of Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the Finance Minister, Prof. Kamene Okonjo, and Bamigbetan mentioned earlier.
Such kidnappings involve detailed planning and insider information; moreover, the mission requires the use of force as such persons are usually surrounded by armed security.
In the case of Bamigbetan, he was abducted by gunmen in the late evening but he was without any security detail because he refuses the use of police orderly.
Narrating his ordeal, Bamigbetan said: “As I was driving into my street, I suddenly saw a vehicle trying to ram into my car. My first reaction was for me and the driver to reverse but when the kidnappers alighted and started firing the vehicle got stuck, even as we tried to escape.
“They caught up with me and asked why we were running, saying the did not want to kill me. I then paused, given that they were not after my life. But I told them I was afraid, so they ordered me back into the vehicle. While inside, they ordered me to lie faced down. I remained in that position for about four hours while they were driving.
“My ears were picking the sound of the tyres and at some point, we got to a place, they then blindfolded me and led me into a room and I felt my hands on the carpet. They demanded that I must not open my eyes even as they kept tightening the piece of cloth.
“Later, they began asking questions. And from the questions, I realised they that they had taken possession of my laptop computer and other documents in the car and were perusing through them.”
Answering National Mirror’s questions, the gang leader of the group that kidnapped Prof. Kamene Okonjo, Jideofor Ogbue, said the name of the president was used to take the queen out of their palace.
According to them, they told her the president wanted to see her in connection with some money her daughter embezzled.
Ogbue, also confessed that a former messenger at the palace, Victor Onochie, assisted with information that helped them gain access to the palace and even helped in the initial success of the operation, revealing the gang collected N13million as ransom, before the minister’s mother was released.
Lagos kidnappers have targeted children more, forcing parents of victims to pay out huge sums of money for the release of their wards. Child kidnapping is the second type and is often easier than those of adults or high profile personalities as it does not endanger the lives of kidnappers or the use of force or gun.
The most prominent feature of this is that a relative or someone with very close tie to the victim or family is usually involved like in the case of the student of American International School.
A suspect, Raymond Quadri, who kidnapped a nine-year old boy, Daniel, at Ikotun area of Lagos in February, told our correspondent: “He knew I did not plan to harm him. All I wanted was to collect money from his parents and buy him some gifts to entice and make him happy so he would not expose the deal.”
His girlfriend and co-culprit, Bolanle, who hosted the victim after the abduction, said she was only told by Raymond that the boy would be spending the weekend in her apartment. And she only became worried and suspicious after her boyfriend stayed away from the house longer than necessary.
Bolanle said: “When he did not come back to pick Daniel after two days, I became worried and started calling him but he soon stopped answering the calls. I later confided in my friend who advised I enquire on what was happening from Daniel.
“When on Sunday Raymond still did not come to my house, I bought some snacks for Daniel and enquired what was happening. He then told me that ‘Uncle Raymond’ planned a deal with him and implored he tells no one.

Kidnap suspects paraded by the police with arms and amunition recovered from them.
“That was how I got to know about the kidnapping. The following day, I called Raymond but he did not call back. Later, someone picked up the phone and I told the person to inform my boyfriend that he is yet to pick the boy he brought to my house. He should come and pick him up, as I would be going to work. Hours later, I saw some police officers arrive and arrested me while taking away the boy.”
The third kind of kidnapping is that of adult kidnapping. This also requires force and could be anybody suspected by the kidnappers to have enough money to pay for his freedom.
An accused, Sunday James, who confessed to have participated in four different kidnappings in Lagos this year, told National Mirror that his gang’s method of operation entails driving around Lagos metropolis seeking out anyone in a new and flashy car. If someone is spotted, he or she is immediately ambushed and kidnapped. James who said he was introduced into the crime by one Victor Emmanuel claimed that he was into the nefarious business to make ends meet.
“It all started in January, when Victor paid for an apartment at Lekki where we usually hold kidnapped victims. The first kidnapping we embarked on was in February this year and we collected N1 million as ransom from the victim. I got N100, 000 as my share of the booty.
“Victor usually takes the lion share since he was the main financier of the group. He was responsible for recruiting gang members and also seeks out who should be kidnapped. When we go out for operation, he usually stays in the front seat and when we see anyone driving a flashy car, he would order the driver to stop and then we kidnap the person.
“He is also the contact person. He controls all phone calls and contacts with victims’ relatives and usually is the one to collect the ransom at the agreed and designated spot. ‘Pastor’ is the one who supplies the guns. He is not a real pastor but attends a church where he is well known and respected. My part is to follow them during operations and take part in the kidnapping process.”
Speaking on the effort sof the Nigeria police to curb the dangerous trend, the Lagos State Police Command spokesperson, Ngozi Braide (DSP), said kidnapping is not on the increase in the state as being speculated.
Bamigbetan

According to her, the reason why people think the incident is on the increase is due to the fact that more suspected kidnappers are being arrested and reported in the media.
Also the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Umaru Manko, recently told journalists that most kidnap suspects arrested by the Command did not commit such offence in the state, citing the case of Prof. Kamene Okonjo.
Manko advised Lagos residents to go about their lawful businesses as the police is already having the upper hand in the fight against kidnappers and their unwholesome trade.
He equally advised relatives of kidnapped victims to keep faith and stop panicking and being quick and ready to pay ransom, saying kidnappers gain more confidence when ransom is paid.

Kanye West Goes Nudé In New Music Video

This week, US rapper, Kanye West sparked controversy as he releases his new music video showing himself completely nakéd.
In the three-and-a-half minute clip, which is created with CGI technology throughout the whole thing, Kanye dances around to the track with his shirt off in computer animated black and white, showing off his muscles which are emphasised with the special effects.
But the last minute of the clip is the most controversial as West boasts about his manly parts and takes off his trousers which he wears throughout the rest of the video.
As the star moves closer to the camera he appears nakéd with his genitalia looking particularly large as he continued moving around to the lyrics under the CGI technology.

Fashola: Study Hard, Obey Parents, Listen To Teachers

Lagos State Governor, Mr Babatunde Fashola (SAN) on Tuesday received the Nursery two pupils of Corona Day Nursery School, Ikoyi on a visit, mentoring the young ones on virtues of studying hard, obeying their parents and listening to their teachers.
•Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, SAN, (middle), interacting with pupils of Corona Day Nursery Schools, Ikoyi, during a courtesy visit to the Governor at the State House, Ikeja, Lagos, on Tuesday.
Governor Fashola who received the pupils who were accompanied by their teachers at the Conference Room of the Lagos House, Ikeja also read the fictional novel- Jack and the Bean Stalk to the children while interacting with them in a stimulating way.
He recalled that as a child, he was also taught by a teacher just as the pupils are now being taught, saying they must always listen to their teachers and guard against taking things from strangers or talking to them.
The Governor who also took time to field questions from the children said his choice of law as a profession was informed by a number of reasons one of which had to do with the wish of his grandmother who wanted him to take up the responsibility of managing her real estate because the lawyer she engaged before was making money out of her.
Speaking on why he did not study abroad, the Governor said the education system in Nigeria was very good then and he saw no reason in going abroad, adding that currently the state government appreciates the contribution of private schools like the Corona Schools and Public Schools towards helping to reposition education in the country.
He explained that he did not study abroad also because he did not like the weather in Europe and believed that Lagos and Nigeria are the best place to be.
Responding to a question on why he does not celebrate his birthdays, the Governor explained that the approach to celebration is that he does not believe in dressing up flamboyantly and throwing parties for a birthday but would prefer to be free to do what he wants on his birthday.
He explained in response to another question that he cannot be described as an accidental Governor because his becoming a Governor was not against his will noting that he was rather encouraged to take up the responsibility, stressing that he would prefer to be described as a lucky Governor.
On why he is not a teacher, the Governor said as a student, there were so many good teachers available then and he felt that the good teachers would be there forever , adding that in the course of his life, he has tried to teach by helping people to learn.
Speaking earlier, the Head of Corona Day Nursery School, Ikoyi, Mrs Esther Abakasanga said the pupils and Corona School management were indeed privileged to have been granted access by the Governor to see the pupils.
She added that the visit is like a completion process for the kids as each of their classes are adorned with the picture of the Governor but that by having a personal encounter with the Governor, the Corona School is bringing the learning to life for the children.
She added that Corona Schools also believes in serving its host communities in a special way, stressing that in the seven locations where the school is located, the institution has adopted state schools.
The children who had earlier recited the National Anthem and the Pledge also sang a birthday song for the Governor who recently celebrated his 50th birthday and also presented him with birthday cards while they were also presented with gifts by the Governor.
The event was witnessed by the Commissioner for Education, Mrs Olayinka Oladunjoye and other aides of the Governor.

Force-Feeding During Ramadan In Prison

Islamic leaders call on administration to rethink policy towards hunger-striking detainees during religious fast, Guantanomo Bay, Cuba.

Islamic community leaders are calling on the Obama administration to rethink its policy of force-feeding hunger-striking detainees in Guantánamo during the month-long fast of Ramadan that have begun on Monday.
The US government has said that barring "unforeseen emergency or operational issues" it will respect the daylight fast by trying only to force feed 45 detainees at night. Muslim groups say that by refusing to suspend the practice during Ramadan the US is adding insult to injury.
"We believe it's wrong to force feed at any time but it is particularly upsetting to do it through Ramadan," said Ibrahim Hooper, spokesman of the largest US Muslim civil rights and advocacy group, the Council On American-Islamic Relations (CAIR).
He said the situation was Kafkaesque: "It's not just a religious issue, it's also a human rights issue in violation of international norms and medical ethics."
Dr Azzam Tamimi, an Islamic community leader in Britain, said he hoped the Obama administration would reconsider. "As Ramadan starts, this issue is becoming increasingly embarrassing for the US government. It's about time President Obama took a brave decision to end this in a way that would be appreciated around the Islamic world."
The continuation of force-feeding through Ramadan is being legally challenged by four of the 106 detainees who are on hunger strike in protest at their prolonged detention without trial. A lawsuit filed with a federal court in Washington last week argues that night-time feeding could lead to long periods without water, endangering the hunger strikers.
SHOCK VIDEO: Force-Feeding During Ramadan In Prison
To mark the beginning of Ramadan, the human rights group Reprieve has released a video in which the actor and rapper Yasiin Bey (aka Mos Def) submits himself to the enteral feeding imposed in Guantánamo. When the first tube was dislodged, he was unable to go ahead with a second attempt by the medical team to insert it.
The star said that he volunteered to be force-fed by two volunteer doctors to highlight what was happening to the hunger strikers in Guantánamo. The four-minute video, directed by Bafta award-winning filmmaker Asif Kapadia, seeks to reconstruct the specific force-feeding instructions set out in standard operating guidelines from Guantánamo leaked to al-Jazeera.
It shows a plastic tube being inserted through Bey's nostril into his stomach. The "Medical Management Standard Operating Procedure" document leaked from the detention camp defines a hunger striker as a detainee who has missed at least nine consecutive meals or whose weight has fallen to less than 85% of his ideal body weight.
If force feeding is deemed medically necessary, medical personnel shackle the detainee "and a mask is placed over the detainee's mouth to prevent spitting and biting". A feeding tube is then passed through the detainee's nostril into the stomach.
The process takes about 20 to 30 minutes but they can be required to stay in the restraint chair for up to two hours until a chest x-ray confirms the nutrient has reached their stomach.

The prisoner is then removed from restraint chair to "dry cell" where they are observed by a guard for up to an hour "for any indication of vomiting or attempts to induce vomiting".
If they do vomit, they are returned to the restraint chair for the entire duration of the observation period in subsequent feeds.
If they bite the tube, the guards hold their head still for "as long as necessary for the detainee to relax his jaw".
Other religious groups have also spoken out against the practice. Last month Bishop Richard Pates, chair of the committee on international justice and peace for the US conference of Catholic bishops, wrote to the defence secretary Chuck Hagel noting the opposition of the International Committee of the Red Cross to force-feeding.
"Rather than resorting to such measures, our nation should first do everything it can to address the conditions of despair that have led to this protest."

Strange world: Woman gives birth to monkey-like baby in Kaduna

A woman (names withheld) gave birth to a strange looking child on Monday at the General hospital Kagarko, Kagarko local government, after several hours of labour.
Reports say the woman, an indigene of SabonIceh village, gave birth to a baby that looked more like a monkey with unusual ears and feet.
One of the nurses who attended to the woman said, “The pregnant woman was rushed to the hospital at about 7:30 am, Monday. And we immediately took her into the labour room.”
“The woman came in through the out-patient department (OPD) after seeing the doctor on call and I decided to rupture her because the cervix was fully dilated. After I ruptured her, fluid measuring about 26 litres gushed out after which she started bleeding. All this time, the baby was still in the womb.”
“When the bleeding persisted, I sent for the medical director and when she came, we went into the theatre to operate on the woman. In the process, the baby started coming out with the legs. So, the medical director asked me to stop and allow her to deliver the baby by herself.
Speaking further, the nurse said, “She delivered the baby breech and when it came out, we discovered that it was an abnormal baby. It was half human and half animal. We lost the baby shortly after delivery.
The nurse who spoke on condition of anonymity said the baby weighed four kilograms adding that the mother of the baby is currently receiving treatment at the hospital.
