OPEN LETTER TO: Bloggers, Maheeda, Afrocandy, Tracy, cossy and others

In time past, celebrities were role models, people whom others look up to and aspire to be like them.

Their attitude, actions and carriage were worthy of emulation as they would not dare do anything to be seen as wayward and unruly.

Such stars like Liz Benson, Bukky Ajayi, Onyeka Onwenu and the late Christy Essien comported themselves in such a way that many parents encouraged their children to aspire to be like them. They would, for their lives, wear clothes that exposed their bodies. But those were the good old days.

These days, the reverse is the case with the so called civilization catching up on us. Nowadays, you will not be called a celebrity if you do not expose what were meant to be covered and if anyone raises a voice, they are seen as backward, retrogressive and conservative.

The likes of one-time ‘born again gospel singer’, Caroline Sam alias Maheeda, Queen of bad[/i], Juliet Mazagwu or if you like, AfroCandy, Drama Queen Cossy Orjiakor, Cameroon-Nigerian singer Dencia and recently, Nigerian-American model, Tracy Ogbonna have made decency look like the dregs of the stone ages.

Every day, they keep bombarding Nigerians with their unclad pictures and funny a thing, they have lots of fans who feed on them.

Forget the public condemnation; many of the people who find them guilty in the public domain secretly adore and admire them, some even aspiring to be like them.

You hear things like ‘it is their lives’; ‘who are we to judge them’ or ‘they are civilized and that is how it is done in advanced country.’ No one is saying it is not their lives or that they cannot do what they want with their lives but for crying out loud, this is Nigeria and we are supposed to place some values on some things.

What these so called celebrities who go about unclad, I dare say, are actually debasing womanhood, whatever anyone likes to say. Some of them do not have any talent of note and what they do is to go about unclad so as to attract attention, which, I must confess, they have been getting.

But what bothers me is the fact that these people are either people’s wives, (in the case of Maheeda) or mother, (AfroCandy). And at the end of the day, those who are still single will become some man’s wife and a mother to kids.

What legacy will they leave for their children and what example are they setting for the younger generation?

Like Maheeda said in a recent interview, they are doing these things to get attention. “It is deliberate. I know what I am doing. The pictures are not targeted at anything. It is all about attention and there is no mistake about it.
“I just realized this way will be a faster hit than any other way. The pictures are working for me.”

Sure, they are working for you today but have you ever thought of your tomorrow - Waploaded.com?

We are not talking only of the females here. The guys too are not left out in this show of uncladness. While the ladies strut around displaying their "oranges", the guys on the other hand are always eager to show off their ‘six packs and abs’,  and most times not afraid to strip unclad on stage, sagging their trousers and revealing ‘something’. They think this is actually sex appeal and a way of selling their brand but did the likes of King Sunny Ade, Ebenezer Obey, Kwam 1, Olu Jacobs and Pete Edochie sell uncladness to get to where they are in the entertainment industry?

With phrases like ‘nudity and sex sells’ and ‘sexy is the new cool’, we have come to an era where showing some skin seems to be the in thing and sometimes termed the new definition of sexy.

Call me old school or some nerd but I still stand my grounds that these show of uncladness does not define you.
